People with IMG-Reliance and STAR Sports has said that there should be one league soon while only people associated with the I-League have actually said "merger" and given a proposed number of teams. I completely doubt we will see six I-League teams merge with the ISL, especially after money was exchanged just to get into the ISL in the first place.
Different people have different opinion. Bhutia do not think that there will be a merger. Sunando Dhar is proposing 14-16 team league. IMG-R will say close down the I-League, then only one league will be there ISL. Nbody knows what will happen. I guess these people do not have any decision making power. It is upto IMG-R to decide. they are the BOSS. If they wish, they will close down the I-League. If they wish they will agree for a Merger. If they agree, they will close down the ISL. AIFF is just a body who will obey the command of their Master.
Basically. IMG-Reliance and STAR Sports are not stupid, there is money to be made from the ISL but it will take time and increasing the length of the league but in a manner that won't disrupt the league would be very beneficial to them. The AIFF will propose their merger, probably say they want to add Bengaluru FC, Salgaocar, Sporting Goa, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Shillong Lajong, Mumbai, and Aizawl into the league or something and IMG-Reliance will do some sort of joke "bids" for new teams and say that the I-League clubs get first dibs but in the end somehow only Bengaluru FC or someone else from Bangalore wins with some other company from a city winning to perhaps expand the league to 10.
There will be an "uproar" about no East Bengal and Mohun Bagan and perhaps Bengaluru FC but that will die down eventually sadly.
Whatever be the merger or expansion, there should be no decrease in quality. As for quantity of teams, Australia has shown that they can run a season long league with just 10 teams.
The second division can be expanded to upto 24 teams like in European countries, maybe with only Indian players. The best Indians can be selected to play in the top division. As the quality of Indian players improve, we can slowly increase the teams and reduce the foreigners in top division.
