Don't they have it in Korea? I believe in after Asia Cup 2011, Subrata Pal created some interest there, but that rule there prevented it for materializing anything.
  • It prevents (qualified) people from working in a position. Think of it this way - if there is a organization that only provides jobs to Indians as accountants, wouldn't that interfere with the ethics of the business and invite challenges from equal opportunity enforcers?

I don't think the same principle would exactly apply here. You can arguably say the foreign rules already prevent qualified Indian players from working in a position... as a player. And this rule would honestly not have anyone complaining as it would benefit the Indians and of the foreign keepers starting in the league, only Edel or Dobias would be realistically returning for next season and Dobias is crap. Meanwhile, we had guys like Karanjit Singh, Subhasish Roy Chowdhury, Ravi Kumar, Shilton Paul, Debjit Majumder, Pawan Kumar, Lalthuammawia Ralte, and Amrindam Bhattacharya all on the benches. These guys can do a job playing in the ISL and probably improve their abilities. None of them are even 30 so they can improve as well.

So what if a better 'keeper than Edel comes over to the ISL? Should the ISL teams ignore him favour of the voluptuous Roy Choudhary or the over-exuberant Arindam? That is the line of reasoning the clubs would want to use to block any such rule.

The legals challenges would still be there. If the rules are tailored for the benefit of the Indian players, why should the foreigners come over, and that is what the agents of the foreigners would ask.

If the rule gets implemented, then what next - only Indian forwards?

I see what you are saying but I don't see how that makes any actual problem. There are eight teams in the league and the goalkeeper position is a usually consistent position where the player does not come off during the game and usually retains his spot throughout the season.

The players want a reduction in the number of foreigners but why would they do that when honestly the difference between 6 foreigners and 5 foreigners on the field at once can be noticeable. Better to just look at the goalkeeping position, where there is no dearth of talent, and implement a rule there while keeping six foreigners but those will be in the outfield where there can be changes in game and from game-to-game.

I don't think there would be much opposition from the owners. Maybe a few lines here and there and maybe something from coaches but it really should not be a problem. Edel is really the only one that looked good this season that could come back and if needs be, just grandfather him back into the ISL (I.E. Allow him back in on the basis that he already played in ISL before the rule was imposed) but that is last minute.

This honestly should not be muchof a problem to do and it was done by the Koreans and has done well for them. And it would not be a rule I can see lasting forever, maybe until we actually get the number of foreigners down to 4-5 overall.
  • I still don't see how it can be enforceable. Additionally, most teams also have 3 'keepers in their squad and that means at least 24 Indian 'keepers has to be employed during the season - which will bring back the Nandy's and Barreto's and that will not help Indian football in no way either.

I rather the clubs be smarter when they recruit. Edel apart none of the foreign 'keepers this season has looked any better than say an Amrinder. So would it be better for a club if they go out their and get the best Indian 'keeper they can get, and have a younger Indian 'keeper and a foreign 'keeper as a back up.

So what if they are still in the squad? It makes no difference as they are already in the squads with foreign keepers still allowed... which, at this point, would just involve removing four foreign keepers and 3 back-ups (from Goa, NorthEast and Kolkata). And in this case, Nandy and Barreto are just third choice keepers and unless it gets to a crisis, they are not seeing the pitch and again, they are third-choice, so probably earning low salaries anyway.

I agree they should be smarter in recruiting and fine, you maybe can not enforce such a rule, but the teams should still be encouraged. FC Goa had the foreign keeper and now Kattimani is the main man. Same with Atletico de Kolkata.

Just reduce the foreign player slot to 5 and automatically  we'll see teams signing only Indian goalkeepers.

But that won't happen! Lets be realistic (weird since I don't think the keeper thing is realistic but its more realistic than going from 6 to 5 foreigners).
