India take on mighty Qatar in an away match in their second Group E fixture of the 2022 World Cup Qualifier on 10 September. On paper it would seem to be an uneven battle as Qatar are the defending AFC Cup Asian Champions while India crashed out in the first round of the tournament. The two teams have had contrasting fortunes at the start of their campaign, with Qatar demolishing Afghanistan 6-0 in the first match. India however blew away a 1-0 lead against Oman, conceding twice in the last to squander three points. They will have to play out of their skins to even earn one point against the Maroons in their bid to battle it out for the second place in the group for any realistic chance of progress to the next round. It is an acid test for Igor Stimac and his boys who will have to prove that they have it in them what it takes to compete against the best in Asia. India have lost three out of the four official matches played against Qatar while drawing one, though, interestingly, the Blue Tigers beat them 2-1 they last met in an unofficial friendly.

The plight of our current team can be judged by the fact that couple of 18 year olds, after playing just 2-3 matches for the team already look like the mainstays of the team.(Narender and Amarjit).Add to it Anwar having the capability to do the same.

However, with most of our squad being in early 20's and the pool of players coming from U-19 and U-16 Teams, specially the U-16 team will no doubt take us deep at the Asian Level Tournament in 5-6 years time.

We are indirectly following Vietnamese Model. They developed and are still developing through their youth teams. Finished 4th at the Asian Games, reached the quarter finals of the Asian Cup and now all of a sudden their players are attracting interest from the European Clubs( 2 of their players are taken by Belgian and Dutch Club with another of their midfielder (22 yr old guy) attracting genuine interest.

We should and probably look to follow something similar to this and I feel we will develop just like the way Vietnam is already developing.(5-7 years time still required by us,Our current U-23 crop generally is bad),this generation needs to go out of the reckoning, from then on we will start developing because an average player from our U-19 ,U-16 batch is much better than is good player from our U-23 batch and the Senior Team. From here the change will come.

  • Earlier we had "Ranking Raaja" - Stephen Constantine.
Now we got "Surprise King" - Stimac.

Ranking Raaja is much better than Surprise King.
In the later case we are neither winning nor inflating our ranking.

  • Why do they have to post pictures of players having dinner? This has been a common feature whenever we travel for away matches.
