Analysis: India's 2022 World Cup goal - a pipe dream!Nobody said it to his face but when All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel said last week India's goal was to qualify for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar, his sunny optimism bordered on grim absurdity.http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE88C07220120913?irpc=932

You see, this is why I want a hiatus and why I will now drop calls for pro/rel etc. Its because we cant get anything we want or what the article wants until some major off-field work is done. We cant have a football league when we are scared of the future. We cant plan for 2022 World Cup or 2026 World Cup when the domestic football future is in such a bleak abyss. We need to shut down the I-League, Federation Cup, Durand etc and tell the clubs to play state football for a time being while the AIFF, IPFCA and IMG draw up plans for the national-domestic era in Indian football.

We cant go on like this, where we are strangling the AIFF along with the IPFCA and IMG. We cant go on playing these tournaments and scheduling friendlies and pretending everything is okay because it is way off. Jeremy (FIFA) said India can make the World Cup in 2022 but I dont think he even gets it. Did he talk to the IPFCA, did he get the real story of what is happening. We already saw it with Arthur Papas. How he does not even want to play but he has to for the sake of his job. Look at the pictures we get on facebook of the grounds. Tolgay did not even have a stretcher!!! We had 2 football related deaths this year. We have club after club in states like Goa and Kolkata saying they can make the I-League just by adding 1-2 foreigners. We have clubs that keep us out of the AFC Champions League like Air India dominate one of our most historic clubs in the world. Speaking of historic clubs, THEY WILL BE GONE IN A FEW YEARS due to the IMG League. Dont act like they will live. We are huge Indian football fans who will follow the I-League even though the IMG League happens but the MILLIONS of casual fans wont. They will leave fast. Dodsal in I-League wont even help that cause. Indian football is going down the toilet and people who say otherwise need to wise up here, this is not going to end pretty.

The Hindu : AIFF feels uncomfortable with a partner reluctant to properly market the game http://mobst.ac/OjhsNn

  • KEEP PROVING ME RIGHT WHY DONT YOU AIFF!!!

They are now feeling the horrors that came when Patel signed that deal 2 years ago. That is all, goodbye World Cups, HELLO SOUTH ASIA!
  • Somehow I liked the last line of the whole news : "
In such a situation many in the AIFF are even thinking of applying the exit clause in the contract to seek new partners with a more positive attitude."

They can do little about it apart from 'thinking'. And they dare not do it. For the rate that IMG is paying (avg 42 crore per year), no one would come forward to give even half of that. Moreover, if a company like IMG backs out, who have an authority in sports marketing, some other company will think 100 times before entering a deal. If there is something that can be done, it is this:

AIFF needs to invest the money they are getting to develop I-league and Federation Cup. Then IMG-R would automatically be able to market it well. Also, if the need be, start the 2 month league or revamp Federation Cup to be a substitute for that 2 month league where new teams can be introduced keeping the existing top 10 from I-league. This is the best bet. Generating revenue is very important at the moment. I know AIFF is spending a big part of the money in organizing International matches and youth. But they need to spend on Fed Cup too. You cannot use it as a tool to satiate the state federations by hosting them in random venues like Ranchi or Jamshedpur
  • AIFF is choked because IMG is not willing to market the product and they are completely dependent on IMG for revenue. Not only that even AIFF is not willing to push IMG by atleast ensuring better product quality
( old saying : you cant clap with one hand )  . Both are at fault. What my point is here if IMG backs or IMG gives in 40-50% stake in I-league/Federation Cup to IPFCA then the clubs would be highly interested and would be willing to go ahead and try to market themselves. This way both AIFF and IMG would be able to generated revenue. Currently no parties are interested in going ahead as they dont see it worthwile.

Also, IMG is pushing the IPL tournament only with expectation that the they will have 100% stake in the IPL tournament.

I wonder if any one can really contact IMG-Reliance and check what is their problem????.. Perhaps a big news article on papers or a 10 min TV programme focusing on IMG-Reliance Hibernation will wake them up..so far we have no concrete action plan from them only empty promises and that the knowledge that AIFF is paid 40 crore per year by them.

its a pity that this AIFF -IMG deal is so one sided ..do aIFF - IMG not understand about teh power of Marketing and a good media campaign?...considering that IMG have the  stick they can surely bully AIFF into getting their act together.....

One thing i fail to understand how does FIFA  &  AIFF expect us to qualify for WC , leave aside being top 10 in Asia without a Nationally strong league, Media coverage,  infrastructure and talent spotting?..
