Robin Singh played for West Bengal if I am not mistaken. Its a stupid rule really but what will you do.

there is nothing called state citizenship, and thus only the state of current residence can be used. otherwise it makes things complicated.
I, for example have been born in Agra (Uttar Pradesh), stayed in Bombay for few years and then spent all my life, schooling etc in Kolkata...now if I had been to represent a state would I then represent Uttar Pradesh? would that have made sense? now obviously Robin singh etc reprsenting Bengal is stupid but then it avoids many complications which would arise if chosen based on birth etc.

I agree. I am not totally against it. Perhaps at say U19 and U16 levels (BC Roy and Mir) we could implement a state-born rule but I understand why some senior players may want to opt for a better state team.
