The elite division matches of the Mumbai Football league will begin today with the contest between Union Bank of India and Mumbai FC under-19 at the University Sports Ground, Marine Lines.

The elite division matches are generally played at the Cooperage football ground, but the ongoing renovation work there means the matches this season will be played at the University ground. A total of 14 clubs, including I-League teams Mumbai FC, who are the reigning champions and Air India will strive for top honours. Air India were disqualified last season after they failed to play their quota of matches. Consequently, Mumbai FC were declared champions.

This year, the committee has decided to conduct the tournament on a straight league format, with the team finishing with the maximum points at the top, declared champions.
Participating teams: Mumbai FC, Mumbai FC Under-19, Kenkre FC, PIFA Colaba FC, Akbar Travels, Air India, Central Railway, Western Railway, Mumbai Customs, Bengal Mumbai Football Club, ONGC, Indian Navy, Rashtriya Chemical & Fertilizers, Union Bank of India.

    Mumbai, January 24:Blitzkrieg FC emerged as champions of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) Division Three league.
    Playing with plenty of grit and determination, Blitzkrieg overcame West Zone United 1-0 in a hard-fought final played at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel on Tuesday afternoon.

    In a closely contested encounter, both the teams enjoyed a fair share of the exchanges, but the first half failed to produce a goal. However, after the change of ends, Agnello Fernandes netted the lone goal of the match in the 38th minute.to seal the win for his team.
    Earlier, Hugh Fernndes Academy (HFA) blanked Chheda Nagar 2-0 in the third place mat, Ian Fialho got a brace for the winners.
    The winners, Blitzkrieg FC, pocketed the winners prize money of Rs 25,000, while West Zone went home with Rs 15,000 and Hugh Academy received Rs 10,000.

    I dont think its a bad amount. Consider the fact that MDFA is organizing even 3rd division with so much of interest!
  • Wow. That is still a lot of money for what can be considered the 6th Tier of Football in India. Most teams in the 6th tier of football in England dont get that much. In America they dont get anything at all.

    i was planning to go for the final but they kept that match on 24th only at afternoon or else would have surely made a visit...
    but just was amazed to know that there were stretch of 655 league games played to finalise the winner of 3rd division really the organisers are doing some great stuffs in organizing the event and maintaining the stats properly too...

    Now the interesting thing is that both air india and mumbai fc hadnt played a match this season in elite division as per my knowledge...<div>May be MDFA or WIFA have disallowed i-league teams from participating or the schedule didnt allowed them to play in this tournament..</div><div><br></div><div>Whatever may be the reason i loved this decision </div><div><br></div><div>And congrats to ONGC </div>

    ONGC is proving its worth for I-league, as per the results goes. ONLY IF they could fulfil the AFC criteria.
