I do not mind a small but well spread out league with evening matches telecast live (sounds like a dream, in India). That is why A-league can be the model. Low attendance there may be attributed to the overall small size of population of the country, which is, I think, less than New York state, forget Indian metros. We may though compare present Indian football following population to that, though in the longer run, India has a better prospect than Australia vis-à-vis football following just because of the population size, if the game is marketed well (snail’s progress, again).

And post A-league, Australian football has really taken off spectacularly. So the football management must be real good there.

That is why I love the American and Australian model so much. They know how to run a football league in a big country. The J.League or Euro model can work only in small countries (unless your Russia, Brazil and Argentina)

Right now we should be at 10 teams, not 16. I dont think we even have 14 stable teams in India.

    10 teams should be:
East Bengal: Obvious historical and crowd pulling reasons
    Mohun Bagan: Same as EB
Pune FC: Most professional club in India
Mumbai FC: Only proper club in the financial capital of India.
Shillong Lajong FC: Professional club and a crowd puller
    Royal Wahingdoh: Same as Shillong
United Sikkim: Same as Shillong + with Baichung there (admit this) we could get international recognition.
Dempo SC: Most pro club in Goa and potential crowd puller and will open a new 30,000 seater stadium soon (if reports are to be believed)
Sporting Goa: If they play is Vasco (Tilak Maidan) then I am sure they will be successful and they are (to me) the 2nd most pro club in Goa.

These clubs are the most stable in India and are spread out and are potential crowd pullers. Now all the AIFF need to do is implement the roster rules and salary caps the way MLS does. NO MARQEE OR ICON PLAYERS THOUGH! We are not that stable.

F*** REFS! They can wait. Right now the quality of the referees is bad but lets face it, EVERY REFEREE IN THE WORLD IS CRAP AND BIASED THESE DAYS! Right now marketing is the need of the day. Bringing people to the stands is needed. YES Even in Kolkata you guys need more of a crowd if you guys stay in the Salt Lake Stadium. 40,000-60,000 people in a 120,000 seater stadium, most of the fans in the 2nd tier of the stadium wont do. Money is surely being lost there. We need all 14 teams getting fans into the seats. Here is my attendence predictions based off watching the games and what I hear...

    Air India - play at a 20,000 seater - 1,000-2,000 a game
    Chirag - play at a 60,000 seater - maybe 5,000 - 10,000 a game regularly
    Churchill - play at a 27,300 seater - 10,000 a game
    Dempo - play at a 27,300 seater - 10,000 a game
    East Bengal - play at a 120,000 seater - 40,000-60,000 a game
    HAL - play at a 15,000 seater - 1,500 a game
    Mohun Bagan - play at a 120,000 seater - 40,000-60,000 a game
    Mumbai FC - play at a 20,000 - 2,000 a game
    Prayag United SC - play at a 120,000 - 5,000 - 10,000 a game
    Pune FC - play at a 20,000 seater - 5,000 a game
    Sporting Goa - play in a 27,300 seater - 10,000 a game
    Shillong Lajong - play in a 30,000 seater - 30,000 a game
    Salgaocar SC - play in a 27,300 seater - 10,000 a game
    Pailan Arrows - play in a 120,000 seater - 10,000 a game

Only Lajong get a respectable attendance based on a attendance to stadium capacity ratio. Marketing is the need of the hour, not referees.[/quote]

Where did u get these numbers ? heres the accurate numbers ( my colleagues & i have reported from most of these venues )
Air India : not even 100-200 per game , even when they played at Cooperage they never got a 1000 in attendance !!
Chirag - no more than 500 - 1,000 a game , only get fans when they play MB, EB or teams with away fans like Lajong
Churchill - play at a 27,300 seater - 10,000 a game !!hahaha ( none of the Goan teams get this number )
    Dempo - play at a 27,300 seater - 10,000 a game
East Bengal - apart from the derby they hardly get 20,000 of which most don't pay to watch
    HAL - play at a 15,000 seater - 1,500 a game
Mohun Bagan -apart from the derby they hardly get 20,000 of which most don't pay to watch
Mumbai FC - slightly better than Air India, but never close to a 100 unless playing teams with away fans
Prayag United SC - depends which venues and the timing , but not took bad considering
Pune FC - of the 5000+ that PFC get at games, more than 50% are bussed in by the club, very few paying fans
Sporting Goa - same as other Goan teams but the best of the 4
    Shillong Lajong - <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oImDjVSS ... e=youtu.be</a><!-- m -->
Salgaocar SC - 2nd best of the goan clubs but never more than 4000
Pailan Arrows - lucky if a 300 people at their games !!
  • what I hear...

    Air India - play at a 20,000 seater - 1,000-2,000 a game
    Chirag - play at a 60,000 seater - maybe 5,000 - 10,000 a game regularly

    East Bengal - play at a 120,000 seater - 40,000-60,000 a game
    HAL - play at a 15,000 seater - 1,500 a game
    Mohun Bagan - play at a 120,000 seater - 40,000-60,000 a game
    Mumbai FC - play at a 20,000 - 2,000 a game
    Prayag United SC - play at a 120,000 - 5,000 - 10,000 a game

These stats are from what I am told on Facebook. I know they were all exaggerated. (Air India getting 1,000 in Pune, HELL NO!) But this is all I could use. Anyway thank you for giving me much more accurate reports.

    So then...
    Air India - 20,000 seater - 500 people
    Chirag - 60,000 seater - 1,000 people
    Churchill - 27,300 seater - 4,000 people
    Dempo - 27,300 seater - 4,000 people
    East Bengal - 120,000 seater - 30,000 people (compromise)
    HAL - 15,000 seater - 5,000 people
    Mohun Bagan - 120,000 seater - 30,000 people (compromise)
    Mumbai FC - 20,000 seater - 1,000 people
    Prayag United - 120,000 seater - 7,500 people
    Pune FC - 20,000 seater - 5,000 people
    Sporting Goa - 27,300 seater - 5,000 people
    Shillong Lajong - 30,000 seater - 26,000 people
    Salgaocar - 27,300 seater - 5,000 people
    Pailan Arrows - 120,000 seater - 300 people

Yet more of a reason to take clubs out of cities and forcing the remaining clubs to market and why all 14 clubs are not ready to be a separate entity as we cant trust the clubs by them selves.

HAL would be between 2k-3k sometimes less
  • usaindiausaindia 1671 Points
i still think we need better marketing and decent product
  • HAL would be between 2k-3k sometimes less

Still for a 15,000 seater stadium which, to me, is one of the best in India, should have at least 5000.
