With the dust having hardly settled on one quadrennial multi-sports event—the Commonwealth Games 2018—the whole sporting world gears up for another sporting extravaganza—the biggest multi-sports  games after the Olympic Games, the Asian Games or the Asiad. The 2018 Asian Games is scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September in Indonesia.  For the first time, the Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities; the Indonesian capital of Jakarta  and Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province. A total of 45 nations will be participating in 462 events in 40 disciplines.

India’s performance in the Asian Games is pretty impressive. It has won at least one gold at every Asian Games, and has always ranked within the top 10 nations of the medal table except the 1990 Asian Games. India’s best-ever performance came at the 2010 Asian Games, when it bagged a total of 64 medals, with 14 gold, 17 silver and 33 bronze. India’s traditional strongholds have been athletics, wrestling, boxing, shooting, tennis, rowing, kabaddi and hockey. While there is a sense of euphoria after India’s impressive showing in the Commonwealth Games, it needs to be pointed out that the Commonwealth Games is not really a benchmark to check out how India performs in the Asian Games. The only time India bagged more medals at the Asian Games than at the Commonwealth Games was in 2006, and it needs to be remembered that countries like China, Japan, North and South Korea, Iran, Thailand and Kazakhstan are not part of the Commonwealth. The fact that the Asian Games organizers have decided to trim Shooting discipline by removing all team events and traditional Asiad events like rifle 50m prone (men and women), 50m pistol, 25m centre fire pistol and 25m standard pistol from their schedule has dealt another body blow to India’s medal prospects. However, the performances of some of the youngsters like Manika Batra, Neeraj Chopra, Gaurav Solanki and Manu Bhaker augurs well for the Asian Games.

This thread is dedicated to preparations, reports, medal prospects etc. about Indian in the Asian Games 2018. Let the discussions begin!
