India’s men and women archery teams one win away from securing Olympic qualification

The quarter-finalists in the recurve men’s and women’s team events at the World Championships will receive three-athlete quotas for the 2020 Olympics.

Indian men’s recurve team put up a solid show to go past Norway 5-1 and storm into the pre-quarter-finals at the World Archery Championships to be just one win away from securing an Olympic quota.

The trio of Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav, and Atanu Das will next face Canada’s Eric Peters, Crispin Duenas, and Brian Maxwell on Wednesday in a bid to secure the three-athlete quotas for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The women’s recurve team also remained in the fray by qualifying sixth from a field of 55 nations for one of the eight Olympic quota spots.

The top-eight seeding in the team event means that the Indian women avoid the first round match on Tuesday and go straight into a decider for the Olympic places where they face 11th seed Belarus Wednesday.

Laishram Bombayla Devi shot 664 to top the leaderboard among the Indians to secure 15th place overall in the qualifications, while Deepika Kumari was next best at 22nd spot with a score of 660. Komalika Bari shot 650 to be ranked 40th in a field of 152 competitors.

There was, however, some disappointment in store for India as they made a first-round exit in the recurve mixed pair event when the duo of Rai and Bombayla lost to their Polish opponents 4-5 (17-19) in the shoot-off.

The quarter-finalists in the recurve men’s and women’s team events at this World Championships will receive three-athlete quotas for the 2020 Olympics. They will be decided on Wednesday.

Indian Men's Archery Team wins the Quota for the Olympics 2020. This takes our tally to 11 competitors.

The Women's team however choked big time again and lost to Belarus.

Our Women's team scored a total of 42 and 43 in the first two sets which means they scored 42 and 43 from 6 arrows each which aggregates to an average of 7 per shit which is beyond horrendous at this level.

Just for comparison ,our Men's team minimum score was 54 from 6 arrows and our Women's team had 43 and 42 from 6 arrows.

    Pathetic is an understatement.

Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi, Dola Banerjee - I am listening to these names for last 10 years. They are perennial chokers in any serious event.

They will lose even in National Games if they are ever held again. Just because some influential corporates are backing them (CSR stuff), other deserving players are not getting chances to represent India. No National games, National Championships are conducted in shambolic ways. same team for last 10 years.

"Former World Number One" will again represent India in 2024 Olympics Qualification ?

Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship: Mirabai Chanu clinches gold in 49 kg event; India bag 13 medals on first day

Former world champion Mirabai Chanu led the Indian medal rush by notching up a gold on the opening day of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship on Tuesday.

The Indian contingent won 13 medals that included eight gold, three silver and two bronze medals in senior, junior and youth categories.

Mirabai lifted a total of 191kg (84kg + 107 kg) in the senior women's 49 kg event to win the gold medal in the Olympic qualifying event, the points from which will come in handy for the final rankings of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Mirabai last took part at the Asian Championship in Ningbo, China in April where she lifted 199kg (86kg+113kg) to miss out on a medal by a whisker.

The qualification process for the 2020 Olympics is based on the performances of the weightlifters in six events over a period of 18 months out of which the four best results logged by a lifter will be considered.

Jhilli Dalabehera also clinched the first place on the podium with a lift of 154kg (70kg+94kg) in the senior women's 45 kg event which is not an Olympic weight category.

In the senior women's 55kg, Soroikhaibam Bindyarani Devi and Matsa Santoshi won the gold and silver medals respectively.

Bindyarani lifted 78 kg in snatch to bag the silver medal. Her effort of 105 kg fetched her a gold medal in clean and jerk as well as the overall gold.

Santoshi stood first in snatch with a lift of 80kg but could only manage 102kg in clean and jerk taking her total to 182kg.

In the senior men's 55kg category, Rishikanta Singh grabbed the gold with a total lift of 235kg (105kg+130kg).

We are going to make India House for 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Kiren Rijiju

Kiren Rijiju said that he would himself lead an Indian delegation to Tokyo as a part of Olympic preparations

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that India House will be set up in Tokyo ahead of the 2020 Olympics to provide hygienic food to Indian athletes who are going to participate in the Games.

"In international events, our athletes must be given food which they are provided as per their choice in our country. We must make it available wherever they go. For Tokyo 2020 also, we are going to make 'India House' (in the Games Village) to ensure we address their food-related needs along with providing technical support to the athletes as well as the officials.

"That is why I am taking the first-hand experience by visiting these iconic sports establishments in the country.

"Diet forms the integral part of a player's performance. During my visit to the National Sports Institute, Patiala, I observed that the junior athletes were given a certain range of food, while the seniors were provided different category. The budgetary allocation of the food was done on the basis of the age groups. I have learnt that all the players require different kind of food. We have decided to allocate the diet budget according to the athlete's requirement, as well as according to the diet prescribed by the nutritionists or dieticians (and not by the age)," Rijiju said.

"I have tried to pick up some of those institutes and centres where we have the best potential and can get immediate results from. These are those low-lying fruits which we need to pick up. The ASI is well known and has given us results also. I am impressed with the way the army have managed and given all kind of support to produce world-class athletes. We will see what we can do with the ministry and the army, to improve the centre further," Kiren Rijiju said.
