This is great news. India needs to be like other Commonwealth Countries where we have all are sports thriving, not just one.

I hate those people that say Cricket should go away 100%, we should support Cricket and Football together, like a real sporting country.
  • An open letter to Andhra Pradesh football association

Our AP state football players are losing out to other counterparts. Our state is not able to participate in all age group nationals including Santhosh trophy. The reason being the ongoing tussle between two groups for gaining control of AP football association in courts.

This has been going on for the last six to seven years. The apex body also looks helpless as they say until all the court cases in AP and Delhi are withdrawn ,they may not be interfering in AP football affairs.

Now my request is how to start from zero. Can a court order be issued restraining both the parties from interfering in the affairs of football and a third body be formed at the behest of AIFF to get the football activity going on.

The footballing activity comprises of -

    1. Forming an APFA body recognised by AIFF.

    2. Sending teams to participate in all age group nationals thereby giving an opportunity to showcase their talent.

    3. Organizing League in all districts.

    4. Organizing Premier league on the bengal style, as there are many corporates in Hyderabad who are interested to invest, but because of the APFA, nobody is coming forward.

    5. Reviving Nizam Gold Cup,Visakha Trophy tournaments.

    6. Construction of an Exclusive stadium for football matches similar to Ambedkar stadium Delhi. In Hyderabad there is only one Gymkhana ground in Secunderabad, which mainly caters to the footballing fans as the ground is centrally placed.

In AP there are two cities which mainly follows football- Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. There are many talented players from these regions who are being deprived of their basic rights to play football.

In Hyderabad there were lot of departmental football teams which closed their door for recruiting football players as there is no /nil football activity. There is one club by name Hyderabad Globe which has recently won four All India Tournaments. They have defeated some big names teams like JCT academy. We need to encourage such teams to go on to professionalism.

I agree with everything besides the fact that they want a Bengal type state league (PLS like), someone tell me how PLS is really special. What is the difference between PLS and the Nagaland Premier League. If anything if you need to follow a league model that allows your states youth to develop in that league then you would copy the NPL model. They have a league that is 100% focused on the Nagaland youth and in my opinion will be a success.

Pradesh needs a new state league which is focused on youth and getting a team in I-League. I hope the APFA get this letter and considers what the letter says (cept for the PLS type league)
  • Everything needs to be revamped about Indian football – Indian national team coach Savio Medeira

Savio Medeira, the Indian national team coach, believes that the amount of money involved in the Premier League Soccer (PLS) could easily alleviate the major problems faced by the country when it comes to football.

He explained that spending crores of rupees to avail the services of a few foreign players such as Hernan Crespo, Fabio Cannavaro and others isn’t the most rationale thing to do.

"First of all, we need to look whether we have the infrastructure and facilities for such an event. If this amount of money (crores) we spend on foreigners then where are we going?” he questioned the logic.

“I have heard that each franchise has to come up with an academy. If that happens then it is good for us. Otherwise it won’t take us anywhere. I’m not too sure about it,” he added.

The 46 year old who guided India to SAFF Championship triumph believes that the country needs a complete overhaul of systems for it to develop.

“I would say that coach education has to improve for starters. Thereafter football at the grassroot must be worked upon. Youth academies by the I-League clubs and not just that, but they must create a culture wherein families come and see their kids play which will be very healthy,” the former Salgaocar coach said.

“The timings of the I-League matches have to be standardized as the players are playing in every two days and that lessens the recovery time. I think we need to sit together and discuss each aspect as everything needs to revamp. We have a technical director (Rob Baan) now and hopefully he will look into it,” he explained further.

The Challenge Cup On My Mind

India are to travel to Dubai later this month for preparations for the Challenge Cup where they are to compete against the likes of Tajikistan, DPR Korea and Philippines. The Men in Blue are to face Oman and Azerbaijan which will allow Medeira to identify the areas which need to be worked upon.

However in the absence of Jeje Lalpekhlua, Medeira had the difficult task of naming strikers for his squad given that most of them do not play regularly for their clubs. Sushil Singh has only recently joined Shillong Lajong, Manandeep Singh has impressed for Air India but lately has been used from the bench, C.S.Sabeeth hasn’t managed to score goals given that he plays for a team, Pailan Arrows, who are content to be in their own half, while Joaquim Abranches of Dempo SC hasn’t been in top form this season.

“Yes, I agree that we didn’t have much choice and it was difficult to find a replacement for Jeje. All the 14 clubs in the I-League prefer playing with two foreign strikers upfront. However you need to let the talented Indian strikers get some playing time. The moment he starts to play then they improve, something which happened with Jeje,” he reasoned.

“Losing him for the Challenge Cup was a big loss. There are more foreign players at the club level and for more Indian strikers to come up, that number needs to reduce. At the club level, nobody is thinking about Indian football and hence no strikers are coming up,” signed off Medeira.

  • So Savio has spoken up and I think he is starting to win me over. Of course this is just talk but still he shows that he is not an idiot.

Stuff in green is stuff I agree with and that is a lot. Let me summarize it...

    1) He is right about the Icon players. They will do little. They will bring in crowds for a while but then the crowds will disappear due to the bad play. 2 icons dont make the game and also its more foreign than I-League. How will that help. I am swaying to off topic here. Next point...

    2) He is right. Stadiums come first. If you have the money you invest in the stadium because you invest in a stadium it leads to fans, fans lead to money and money leads to players. Even in MLS we have artificial turf in most MLS stadiums (Not New York, we use real grass) so you can tell turf in MLS is better than all of India yet we still get complaints from our star players about how shit it artificial turf is. Even Thierry Henry who plays for my Red Bulls complained about the turf even though he was being payed more than all PLS players combined. Point... money wont stop "icon" players from complaining.

    3) Academies will help. Whether there I-League or PLS or any other league they help. Right now Pune FC is setting the bar. Sure Mohun Bagan have one and Lajong sort of does, same with Dempo who have a small acadmey but Pune FC beats them all out right. In fact the Pune FC Academy system may even be better than Arsenal FCs and Barcelonas academy. We need a rule in I-League from the AIFF. If you join the the I-League then you have 5 years to start an Academy or your automatically expelled. (Example: You get promoted in 2012, you have till 2017 to start your Academy)

    4) We need an overhaul. From National League to small inter-city district leagues. A better football pyramid is needed. It should be I-League, I-League 2nd Division, Zonal Leagues, State Leagues, District Leagues and on from there.

    5) This point in blue really caught my eye. Parents staying and watching there kid play. In America we have Soccer moms who just volentarly take care of the team. They are just mothers who want to get involved. They go to the practice or game. Just sit and watch it while the kids and coaches do there thing then after practice and matches they take the kids out or they provide snacks. Thats what we need for grassroots. Total Parent Participation. It may seem like they wont help but trust me they do (I would not be a New York Red Bulls U18 player if it were not for my parents at practices.)

    6) Timings is a major problem. We have way to many weekday games. I wonder who's idea was that. If you want fans at the games then we need weekend 7:00 matches. Or if needed weekend day matches. Playing in 90 degree (F) weather in the sun during the day can kill some one. Also people have work in the weekdays. They cant leave work for a football match at 3:30. We should have an MLS type week schedule... Wednesday will be the first game of the round. The match will be at night at 7:00pm. Thursday: TEN Action Match of the Week at 7:00 pm. (Thats 2 out of 7 games done, both at night) Saturday: Have 3 games. 2 at night, 1 during the day. Then on Sunday end the Round with 2 more games, both at night. And that is it. 6 out of 7 games at night with no stadium conflicts can be achievable.

    7) I highlighted Men in Blue because we are BLUE TIGERS! Not Men is Blue.

    8) He is right. More Indians need to be given exposure. Especially the young ones. Right now the AIFF need a rule that only 2 foreigners out of a teams 4 can be forwards. The rest have to be something else. Also each I-League team should be forced to play at least 1 Indian up front. That way they get more experience. Also if a team tries to break this rule (register a foreigner as a midfielder but then play him up front) then that player is suspended a month and the coach is suspended a month too.

So overall I agree with Savio for once. He has spoken wisely for once in his life. Now show that you are wise as a national coach. First step is to select wisely for the AFC Challenge Cup.
