The GFA’s Goa Professional League will be a 10-team affair as the recommendations of the select GFA Committee handpicked to restructure the same were not accepted for the season 2013-14 at the Executive Committee meeting, here Friday. In fact, the draw with 10 teams designed by the Competition Committee headed by Schubert Furtado was already released with the consent of the teams participating in the event.
The recommendations for changes including increasing the number of teams from 10to 12 was suggested by the select committee headed by vice-president Elvis Gomes with Bishut Themudo and Babli Mandrekar as members. It was selectively leaked to just one newspaper yesterday with even the Executive Committee members shocked that they were sidelined, being totally unaware of the same.
Salgaocar Football Club, one of the Pro League teams. Kudos to Shivanand Salgaocar, president, who made it amply clear that increasing the number of teams in the new season at this late stage when the League is over and the relegation issued decided, it would only make a mockery of the existing rules and regulations and that it would be against the sacred principle of Fair Play. Salgaocar’s missive had to be presented as only Churchill Bros had made a case that since Vasco were a force to reckon with since 1951 and thereafter kept the Goan flag flying high for several years. It is understood that Churchill Alemao was made to believe that all ten Pro League clubs were in favour of retaining Vasco in the top league.
Meanwhile, Vasco Club and Sesa FA have been recommended for the Second Division I-League which will kick off in November. Sesa had already applied for the same. Both clubs are understood to have fulfilled the AIFF’s criteria for Pro Clubs.
