It depends on how much game time he has been promised by the manager...not much of a financial move. Maybe he wanted to stay near his home (Liverpool ). In that case his options were limited to Bolton(league one), Wigan(promoted to championsip ), South port and chester in 5th div stockport in 6th div and Crewe in league two...maybe Bury and his former club Rochdale in league one.
Crewe are rebuilding after relegation. They used to be mainly known for their investment in youth, which they still are, but now they recognize the need for experience. They let go a lot of players this summer and have some money to splash (by League Two standard). Dagnall is also 30 now and did not fully adjust to the Championship in Scotland last year. He scored 11 goals in League One before coming to India.
He is still a good player and presence to have, a lot, lot better than Calum Angus who could barely survive in the US 3rd tier.
