ISL: Kerala Blasters appoint Viren D'Silva as new CEO
D'Silva returns to the Kochi-based team replacing Varun Tripuraneni...
Kerala Blasters FC announced the appointment of Viren D'Silva as new club CEO on Friday.
The Kochi-based team finsihed their 2018-19 Indian Super League (ISL) season in ninth place with just 15 points on board. D'Silva will replace Varun Tripuraneni, who had held the position since February 2017.
D'Silva returns at the helm of administrative affairs of the Yellows after having worked there for the first two season of the ISL, in 2014 and 2015. Kerala Blasters had reached the finals of the inaugural ISL in 2014, ending runners-up to ATK.
The announcement was made through a press statement issued by the club, which read:
"We would like to announce that Varun Tripuraneni, CEO of KBFC has decided to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions in grassroots football. We respect Varun’s wishes and have requested him to continue supporting Kerala Blasters grassroots efforts even in the future, which he has kindly accepted.
We would also like to announce the appointment of Viren D’Silva as CEO of KBFC. Viren ably led the club in the first two seasons of ISL and was instrumental in putting together the team for the third season.
We would like to thank Varun for his leadership of the club through extremely challenging circumstances and wish him all the best for his future endeavours. We would also like to wish Viren all the best in his new role."
The team willl have a fortnight's time to prepare for their Super Cup qualifiers in Bhubaneshwar under Portuguese manager Nelo Vingada.
Kerala Blasters: A sorry season ends with a whimper
Kerala Blasters would have liked to end the season on a high but instead, they were taught a lesson...
Football teams who have had a bad season need to feel the need to end their campaigns on a high note. It is so badly needed not just for the players but also for the fans who have been handed one heartbreak after another throughout the season.
Kerala Blasters went into the Super Cup qualifier against Indian Arrows hoping to make an impact and aim for the trophy but massively underestimated the skillset of the U-19 developmental squad that plays in the I-League and were punished.
It took only a few minutes once the game started for the viewers to realize that the young boys were hungrier to win. The youngsters, under the tutelage Floyd Pinto, were coming on the back of an impressive season in India's top-tier league and it showed.
Blasters, who had picked up just two wins during the entire ISL season, did not have the required confidence and attitude to match their young counterparts.
Once again, a lack of creative output in the final third hurt Kerala Blasters and it has been the story of their season. They simply did not know how to find a way into the net past Jitendra Singh, Anwar Ali and an excellent Prabhsukhan Gill.
Before the season started, Slavisa Stojanovic had suggested that Indian players must learn technique. Well, it is safe to say that it is not just the Indian players who need lessons.
Many had predicted the low key signings of Stojanovic and Poplatnik to succeed after the high-profile moves bombed in the previous transfer window. It has now turned out that they are just as bad if not worse. So the first priority needs to be, once again, recruitment because David James' plans of signing players on merit than fame, though it makes sense, needs modification.
Blasters' brightest spark of the season is Sahal Abdul Samad, who is destined for great things at the international stage if he keeps working hard. He is already a part of the India U-23 setup and it won't be long before we see the Keralite boss the midfield for India. He was the only player that Arrows struggled to deal with on Friday.
Anas Edathodika's form has been on a downward graph throughout the season and it hit rock bottom when he used his hand to stop the ball at the goal line and was sent off with his team chasing the game. Sandesh Jhingan showed a will to fight but starting as a right-back, he was also beaten several times on the wings and ended up playing on the left wing in the second half as Blasters desperately searched for a route to get back into the game.
The Yellow Army looked lost. They had no idea how to approach or manage the game and it has been a similar story in most of their fixtures this season. The summer of 2019 is going to be a long one for the management.
Crucially, there is an absence of a leader on and off the pitch. Neither have the players shown the willingness to lead from the front nor have the management.
ISL: Kerala Blasters bring in Jain University as presenting sponsor
The association was jointly announced at an event in Kochi on Friday in the presence of Dr Chenraj Roychand, President, Jain Group of Institutions, Tom Joseph, Director-New Initiatives at Jain, Dr J. Letha, Pro Vice-Chancellor, club owner Nimmagadda Prasad and CEO Viren D’Silva. As part of the deal, the Jain University logo will be displayed at the back of the team's jersey. Blasters' new signing Zayed bin Waleed, who enrolled at the University for a Bachelor's degree course, was also present at the venue.
About the new association, club CEO Viren D'Silva said, "These are exciting times at Kerala Blasters as we look to build strong and lasting partnerships with Jain University. As a club, we are focused on the holistic development of passionate and talented young players on and off the field, wherein they have an opportunity to pursue academics and football in equal measure.
"We are happy to have on-board a partner who shares the same vision. An example of this building association is our young talent, Zayed Bin Waleed, who will now pursue his under-graduate course from Jain Deemed-to-be-University after completion of his schooling from the UAE."
“We are happy to associate with Kerala Blasters. The Indian Super League matches have evoked tremendous enthusiasm and have certainly done well for Indian sports. Jain (Deemed-to-be-University) has always supported sports, sports events and encouraged sporting talent as part of its commitment to nation building. Such commitment is reflected in the achievements of our students like Pankaj Advani, Rohan Bopanna, K. L. Rahul, Karun Nair, Anup Shridhar, Robin Uthappa and many more who have represented India at Olympics and International tournaments. Through our new association with the ISL, we are looking forward to a high-spirited sports tournament,” said Dr Chenraj Roychand.
"World over, running a football club is not an easy business to be in. What we do have is the Reliance Group and its partners Disney - their commitment to Indian football is unwavering.
