He doesnt, Netaji SC was named after the Freedom fighter, This guy changed it to Chennai City FC to try and connect to the city reading himself for a possible I-league entry..... Only for Chennaiyin FC to piss on the cake being made ready.
Nine, it will be! I-League officials confirmed that the country’s top tier league will go forward with nine teams after Royal Wahingdoh became the third team to pull out of the tournament on Saturday.
Of the eleven teams that had participated in last year’s I-League, Pune FC and Bharat FC had earlier suspended their first team operations, while Dempo had been relegated.
With the entry of Aizawl FC and DSK Shivajians, the number of teams in the league is now nine — the lowest ever participation in the top-flight since the National Football League was founded in 1996. Ever since its inception, at least ten teams have participated in every edition of the league.
“We do not have time to consider a new team,” I-League CEO Sunando Dhar told Express on Sunday.
“The league will likely go forward with nine teams,” he revealed.
Dhar also confirmed that a nine-team league would not be flouting AFC or FIFA regulations. “There are plenty of countries where top tier leagues run with eight teams or less. So if the I-League has nine teams, we will not flouting any norms,” he said.
Wahingdoh owner Dominic Tariang had told Express that there would be no reconsidering the decision to pull-out even if I-League officials call them for a meeting. Dhar confirmed that he would not be holding any individual meeting with Wahingdoh officials. “No individual meeting with them has been scheduled. But there is an I-League committee meeting scheduled for today. Like all teams, Wahingdoh have been invited. But I don’t know if they are coming,” he said.
Reports had emerged that I-League officials made an effort to convince relegated Dempo to return to the fold when Pune FC and Bharat FC had pulled out. But the Goan club had reportedly rejected the offer and had decided to participate in the second division.
