Fernandes feels that staying on
top during the I-League break
was very essential for his team
Salgaocar.
The green brigade which had
amassed 40 points is one point
ahead of second placed Churchill
Bros and Francis opined that it’s
for his teammates to sustain that
winning momentum. “We’ve
done all the hardwork, everyone
was involved in the efforts, we
knew it did surprise a lot of
people and it was vital that we
remain above others going into
the break. We wanted it that
way, it happened and now
we’ve to carry on the winning
momentum, and I strongly
believe that all will agree with it,”
expressed Francis quiet buoyant
on the prospects of his team in
title contention.
Salgaocar meet Pune FC away in
a tricky encounter when the
league resumes in the first week
of April and also have to face
local title aspirants Chruchill Bros
and Dempo in the crucial run-up
to the League.
The matches against the Goan
opponents could be very
decisive for the former NFL
champions and any slip up could
allow the arch rivals to take over.
“Not only those two matches,
every match after the League
restarts is significant for us and
we’ve to win and make sure not
to drop too many points. We’ve
done extremely well specially
against the bigger clubs, that’s
why we’re on top. Our fans are
also back in numbers and we’re
expecting them to support us
here so it won’t be easy for the
other teams, but everyone here
is convinced that we can go on
and clinch the title,” explained
Francis.
The Goan giants are well served
by a few youngsters like Gilbert
Oliveira, Anthony Barbosa and
Rino Anto but the usefulness of
Francis who can operate in the
defence as well as on the wings
is cleverly utilized by Karim
Bencharifa that the 25-year-old
is now a regular on the team
sheet. “It’s a great fulfilment to
be part of this glorious club, it
doesn’t matter where the coach
wants me to play, I’ll have to
give my best and when I make a
significant contribution it’s very
pleasing and when the team
wins it’s even more pleasing.
We’re well placed at the moment
and we’ve to work hard to
accomplish our aim,” asserted
Francis the scorer of four goals
in the League.
