    Optimistic calculation of medals
    3 in Wrestling
    2 in shooting
    1 in Athletics
    2 in Boxing
    1 in Hockey
    1 in Weightlifting

I cannot see more then 10 - this is also extremely optimistic analysis

2 in Shooting is an understatement bro, with mixed team events,it could be 5-6. Boxing can give us more than 2,more like 3-4.
Also, one can't rule out outside medal sports for us like Badminton, Archery(Team event.)
My expectation is at least 12,could be a couple more.

Luck of Draw will be critical

In Womens wrestling   Japan will be a formidable opponent. Avoid them till reaching Finals
In Hockey  avoid Belgium till atleast the semi final
In Mens Boxing, avoid Kazakh, Uzbek and other central asian republic boxers till semifinals.  Good thing is thhat host japan is weak.

At max, we can win 8 medals

    3 in shooting
    2 in Wrestling
    1 in Boxing
    1 in Weightlifting
    1 in Hockey/Athletics

Unless, we have capability to win against Belgium/Australia, we cannot count Hockey Medal
In Athletics, only Neeraj Chopra have outside chance for a medal. Cannot count on Kamalpreet Kaur until she is consistent.
Counting Weight-lifting though only hope is on Mirabai Chanu. She improved heaps & bounds in clean & jerk but she needs to improve in snatch. As North Korea is not competing in Tokyo Olympics and each country can send only 1 athlete (China has 2 top weight lifters in Mirabai's category), Mirabai will be seeded 2nd in Olympics and can win atleast Bronze medal.

We better forgot about medal chances in Badminton/Archery.

As u said, in women's wrestling , Japan will be formidable opponents . But in men's, Russian Wrestlers are top notch. Even Japan will be stronger in Men's wrestling as they are hosts.

In Men's Boxing, along with Kazakh & Uzbek boxers, Cuban boxes are also tough to beat.

    In Mens Wrestling
Iran  Georgia and other former Soviet Republics can all throw a surprise on their day.

If we consider former Soviet Republic, Azerbaijan will be one of the toughest for us to face in Men's Wrestling

Medal Prospects are not your Medal Winners. Some times, many medal prospects fail to perform, whereas some lesser athletes (in terms of medal chances) win medals.

Let's analyse(briefly):- If we talk about World Championships(last held):- Then we have 8 Medal Winners in Olympic categories and sports(4 in Wrestling and 4 in Boxing (2 men,2 men).

All these medal winners, would surely be counted as Medal Prospects.8 of them (Ravi , Bajrang, Deepak, Vinesh in Wrestling). Amit,Manish in Men's Boxing and Mary and Lovlina in Women's Boxing.

Moreover, in case of events of Boxing and Wrestling, those who are reaching at least Quarter-Finals(One win away from a medal) and Bronze Medal matches in Wrestling (one win away from a medal) should also be counted but we ignore the as of now.

Apart from 8 listed above, Mirabai is a sure shot Medal Contender, specially if North Korea withdraws, making it 9 Medal Prospects(Prime Medal Prospects).

Now,coming to shooting (all our shooters, who have been selected are ranked in top 10 of their events baring maybe a couple.

In 10m pistol event(both men and women),25m(rapid fire pistol event women). In these events, both our shooters are ranked 1 and 2 respectively, highlighting a possibility of two medals from one event. Add to it, mixed team events in these categories, raising our hopes.

Therefore, I am saying that 9 genuine medal prospects(based on World Championship medal). ADD TO IT, SHOOTING POSSIBILITY (5-6 minimum, could be more).

This is excluding, Possibility of outside medal sports like Athletics, Hockey, Badminton etc and other competitors(near misses) one, we should be atleast looking at 12 medals easily in my opinion.

Moreover, less public pressure should prove beneficial for our Athletes.

Now, whether they win or lose is another thing but we should be ideally looking at a range of 12-15 medals in my opinion. Any thing less tha double figure(10) and I will be extremely disappointed..

If 10, then number of Gold's etc would be considered by me personally to evaluate our performance..

What is the Badminton story this time ?
    Qualification
    And
    Medal Prospects
  • BadBad 5146 Points
Qualification is based on a cut-off date basis. One should have a certain ranking on a specifics date.

Purely speaking on form, no obvious medal contenders. However, best chance will still be Sindhu(does well in major tournaments) and Men's Doubles pair of Chirag and Satwik could spring a surprise..Will be difficult for both based on recent form.
