If Govt. allows sending Football team for Asian Games !!! IOA has cleared it, now it is upto sports ministry under Government control to clear the contingent.
The problem is that same yardstick cannot be applied for every sport. Govt. is looking at FIFA and AFC Rankings to clear the participation while Asian Games is U-23 age group plus we are looking at preparation for AFC asian Cup.

Why the hell Govt. won't send the team? By God's grace we are not such a poor nation that we can't afford it.
Another thing, this Asian games matches won't have FIFA ranking points, right?

Govt can't waste money on tickets and other thing's on football team, that money should be used for minister's junket.

  • The Indian Olympic Association will be the body under fire if a large contingent fails to bring back an acceptable number of medals. That’s why we have put these criteria in place. We don’t want any passengers in our contingent who don’t deserve to be there
    -IOA president Narinder Dhruv Batra

The criteria are not hard and fast ones, but just guidelines. We cannot punish sports that are on an upward curve and have even qualified for the continental championship. Such cases need to be discussed thoroughly before a final decision is taken,” IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta

these are laughable excuses unless there is logical explanation

    There are three stages
    1) Sports Federation  like AIFF
    2) Indian Olympic Association headed by Batra, Mehta under whom all the Sports associations come
    3) Sports ministry under Central Government and Sports Minister.

So far Football team has cleared two stages.
AIFF has shown the intent to participate in the Asian Games. Mr Patel and Constantine want to send India Team there.
As per Sports ministry directive, IOA has done their own Qualification criteria and Football is in the list.
I think that third stage - Sports ministry under Central Government want more cuts. Their directive is not towards Football specifically but overall cuts to whole contingent.
Still June 30th is the deadline. Lot of lobbying will take place. We are Indians and everything is sorted out at the last moment.

Both Batra and PP are sports loving persons and have enough clout. It is the third stage which is making cuts.

@sam ;  no FIFA points as it is essnetially U-23 tournament.

After Chhetri's appeal and the buzz among people it will be difficult to drop football for ministry. An online petition from Blue Pilgrims will make it more difficult as surely media will cover any petition made by them now.

What we need now is an online petition to force Constantine's hand into selecting the best possible players.

Selection irregularities may cost India in Asian Games 2018 equestrian events

The Equestrian Federation of India is in the midst of a controversy after it selected and then quickly annulled the selection of the team for the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta. There are allegations that it did not adhere to selection norms.

Allegations of intentionally bending rules to include certain riders into the national team may result in India missing out at the equestrian events at this year’s Jakarta Asian Games, according to people familiar with the developments.

The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) secretary-general RK Swain had announced a seven-member squad on June 4. But within 24 hours, its president Lt. Gen Ashok Ambre reversed the decision after some riders alleged that there had been gross irregularities in the selection process.

There is now a possibility the team might not make it to Jakarta for the August 18-September 2 Games if EFI misses the June 30 deadline set by the Union sports ministry for sending its final list.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, these people alleged that among the riders who were selected, two in ‘eventing’ and one in ‘show jumping’ had been picked in contravention of the rules. One of the allegations was that two riders – Rajesh Pattu and Rakesh Kumar -- rode incorrect tests in the dressage test for qualification in the eventing discipline at Jardy, France in May.

As per rules, they should have competed in the Dressage Test B, but they took part in Test A, it was alleged. In addition, they were adjudged by only two judges, as against the EFI norm of three judges.

In spite of these irregularities, they were included in the team announced on June 4, some other riders contended.

When contacted, Pattu admitted that there were only two judges, but said it was not something that was in his control. “It is immaterial whether I was in Test A or Test B,” he added.

In show jumping, the allegation is that Chetan Reddy competed as an HC (“hors concours” or out of competition) entry in a selection event. An HC rider, as per norms, cannot be considered for selection. But when the team was announced, Reddy’s name was on it.

People familiar with the developments said another allegation was that the EFI told riders who had cleared the dressage trials at the last minute that these competitions would not be considered as part of the selection process. This was in spite of EFI sending a committee member to Gestut Hallege (Austria) to oversee the trials on May 22-23.

When asked why the selection was cancelled, EFI secretary-general, Swain, said: “It is the prerogative of the president and the selection committee (to select or scratch a team). I am the secretary-general. Once the selection panel gives me the names, I’ll initiate the process.”

Asked if there was infighting in EFI, the secretary-general added, “There is no question about that. It’s the president who signed on the (initial) list of names.”

Lt. Gen Ambre could not be reached for comments.

A top sports ministry official said the ministry cannot interfere with the selection process. “But if we find any discrepancy in the selection, or if the criteria are not met, we can warn the federation to go by the rules,” he said on the condition of anonymity.

Incheon medallist Swaran uncertain for Jakarta challenge

Swaran, who narrowly lost to Dattu Bhokanal during the rowing nationals in December 2017, was slowly getting back to best after suffering from a damaged back for years.

In what could be a setback for Indian rowing, the participation of 2014 Incheon Asian Games bronze medallist Swaran Singh in the men’s single sculls category at the upcoming edition in Jakarta is in doubt. The 28-year-old is not in the best of health. “He has not been keeping well recently. Hopefully, he will recover before Asian Games.

He has been suffering from typhoid and some other small niggles. He was also having an infection in the ear, for which he was receiving treatment at SRMC in Chennai. He will most probably not take part in the singles scull, which was the initial plan. Depending on his recovery, a decision will be made if he can participate in a team event,” Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, president of the Rowing Federation of India, told Express on Wednesday.

Swaran, who narrowly lost to Dattu Bhokanal during the rowing nationals in December 2017, was slowly getting back to best after suffering from a damaged back for years, soon after the London Olympics. However, the latest setback for the rower, who is currently at the national camp at the Army Rowing Node in Pune, is sure to give the federation selection headaches ahead of the quadrennial event in August. As things stand now, Dattu will be leading India in the men’s singles scull event, while Dushyant Chauhan will participate in men’s lightweight single sculls. He had won bronze in this category at the 2014 Asian Games. The federation is hopeful of fielding eight boats in Jakarta.

The RFI will be conducting a selection meeting from June 22 to 24 in Pune to finalise who will participate in which category. “Every athlete’s record and statistics since foreign coach Nicolae Gioga took over is with him and they will be selected on the basis of that. There is no race in the form of selection trials this time. It will be based more on analysis of their performances over that period of time,” Rajlaxmi, who was in the city for the 21st subjunior and 3rd inter-state challengers sprint national rowing championships, said
