I think African players benefited when Indian football was very much direct. We had lots of British managers and Indian coaches who preferred playing 4-4-2 with two strong African center forwards going up against 1 foreign and 1 Indian defender.
The game was very direct and balls were played from defence to forwards and whenever midfielders get the ball they attempt to cross rather than try to build up play.
This is why Armando Colaco and Dempo dominated Indian football for years. Armando's game was different. He preferred a slow paced passing game.
Times changed with people like Oscar Bruzon, Arthur Papas ( he was a bad coach ), Westwood, Reddy etc who came in also players like Daryl Duffy, Cornell Glenn, Abdel Hamid Shabana who were technically stronger started dominating.
I remember in 2013-14 season when East Bengal and Bagan struggled in with Moga, Chidi, Odafa, Muranda kinda players.
One good thing about African players is reliability, they are like AK47s of Football reliable player's who will work in indian conditions of ectrime weather and bad pitch conditions compared to a European player.
