As the Hero Intercontinental Cup inches closer, the Indian football team have been busy preparing for the second edition of the tournament in Mumbai. This year's edition, which will be hosted at the EKA Areana by TransStadia in Ahmedabad, will see an all-Asian contingent including DPR Korea, Syria and Tajikistan taking part.
Reigning champions India, who won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2018 beating Kenya in the final, appointed a new head coach in Igor Stimac earlier this year, who will look to prepare his team for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The Blue Tigers, who are currently holding a preparatory camp at the Mumbai Football Arena, have inducted several new faces who are expected to make their international debut at the tournament. The competition will begin with India taking on Tajikistan on 7th July with the final scheduled to be on 18th July.
According to the recent FIFA rankings, India (101) will be the second-highest ranked side in the tournament following Syria (83). The rest of the two sides, Tajikistan and DPR Korea currently occupy the 120th and 121st position respectively.
