India, since independence, registered the blue kit as their official kit (in the olympics, FIFA, FIH and elsewhere). When Milovan Ciric was appointed National Coach, he saw the appalling apathy of the players for the national team (remember the infamous desertion of the players from the camp, save a rookie Biswajit Bhattacharya?), and moved forward with a jersey in national colours to inspire them. It was actually orange shirt, white shorts and green socks combination. AIFF accepted it, but after his departure, the original kit resurfaced. We were back to being blue tigers.
@shibier Are you sure about Nehru Cup 1982? It was held in Feb-March and Coloured TV came to India only in 1982 Asian Games-that is in November. Everything before that was in Black and White. We have colored reels of India Hockey from 1956. India always Blue and Pakistan always Green.
Cricket also Blue as India started Coloured clothing in 1980s especially for Australia NZ Day and Night matches.
This video shows a Jersey in 1984. Whitish with dark front. Malaysia is in Yellow.
