Climax Lawrence retires from International football

India captain Climax Lawrence, who led the team to the SAFF Cup title in December, retired from international football on Tuesday after being unceremoniously dropped by coach Savio Medeira from the 30-probables for the AFC Challenge Cup in March.

The Dempo midfielder told IANS from Pune that he was hurt with the way he was dropped from the national team. Lawrence said Savio called him Monday to say that he was dropping the veteran midfielder from the national team.

"I had to retire. Age is not on my side. But this is not the way you treat a senior player. During the SAFF Cup, Savio said I have two years of international football left in me. And now he does a U-turn," said Lawrence, who had also captained the team in the Asian Cup last year in the absence of injured Bhaichung Bhutia.

"If he had told me earlier then I would have retired after the SAFF Cup or the friendly against Bayern Munich. It really hurts to be treated badly after serving the country for more than a decade," he said.

Lawrence, who also led the team in the World Cup qualifiers last year, during the SAFF Cup had indicated that he would take a call on his international career after the tournament.

"I was thinking about retirement and thought I would hang up my boots after the AFC Challenge Cup. But it was not to be. I am retiring with a heavy heart," he said.

Lawrence, however, will be continue his club career with Dempo.

"I will continue playing club football as long as I can," he said.

I but do think that AIFF should give a proper exit to other senior players...that should not only be applicable to Bhaichung....I dont mean a exhibition match with Bayern...but yeah they sud nt feel the way Climax feels

Let the Nehru Cup be in celebration for these old men. The Nehru Cup almost mean nothing anyway so celebrate the contributions of guys like Gawli, Climax etc there.

It would have been great if we were in the Olympics so we can send Climax, Gawli and another oldie there to end there careers on a high

Kudos!!! to Savio for a brave decision to drop a senior from National Team.

On the part of Climax, I think he is over reacting!!! He is not the first one to get axed because of age and certainly will not be last. There are many example such as Beckham, Ronaldhino, etc who were axed and new faces appear in their place. In India, problem is that seniors think that they are automatic selection because of their seniority, but they need to understand team comes first than individual. And the most important member is the coach/manager, he has the sole responsibility of team selection to tactics to team winning or losing.
I must appreciate Savio for keeping his seniority in mind and calling him personally to make aware of his decision than making him known through media.

AFC challenge cup is important , a mistake can cost us badly. I complete agree with arsenalfan let the Nehru Cup be the time where they can retire gracefully. And Climax and other senior members should understand it.

At last we all must thank Climax for his service to Indian football, truly he has been great ambassador for India in football fraternity.

i felt that he should have retired after title defense of saff cup as captain....may be this is not the way to treat a senior player like him...but he should have known that he is no more good enough to be in the starting line up of our national team.....you had been one of our best player during your prime time but thanks for all your service and it is time for youngsters to be given the place.....
wish he continue his splendid club career as long as possible

I would like to make 2 points:

    1. savio should not be given the credit for dropping non-performing seniors. He was repeatedly insisting on keeping the craps like Steven Dias, Climax, Gawli, Anthony etc. The inside news is that in the 1st list that he submitted to the AIFF, all these grandpas were there. Only because AIFF pressurised according to their decision post Afghanistan match debacle, he dropped a few of them but not all. You will be surprised to see the list when it comes out. Though finally he includes Arnab Mandal, he has ignored Mehtab Hussain!! The reason he stated is that Mehtab does not fit in his scheme of things <!-- s:violence-smack: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/violence/smack.gif" alt=":violence-smack:" title="Smack" /><!-- s:violence-smack: -->
