... however, after doing some wiki work it seems that hockey is still a semi-pro/amateur sport in India and the world really with no real interest at all! Now, I know this was said on this thread a couple weeks ago but why is it like this? Hockey seems like a very interesting sport to me and it was India's national sport at one point but it still is semi-pro here. Why?
End of an era. One strange thing, Anand Amritraj is the captain of India's Davis Cup Team. Strange. US citizen can be non playing captain but his son and nephew Prakash and Stephen Amritraj cannot play for India.

Hockey is popular in India, Pakistan, malaysia. Other then that, it is very low in popularity charts in other countries. It is medal event in so many games all the time. SAF Games, Asian Games, Olympics then World Cup, Champions trophy. They should reduce the tournamnets like this World league going on. If players are busy in national duty all the time, time for clubs or leagues get shortened.
Agree. Hockey has so much potential as a club sport... again, I can see the HIL being a popular 4-6 month professional tournament in the future but it cant until the HIL gets stable and until we see less medal tournaments. SAF Games and Asian Games for example should be reduced to young players while Champions Cup is just minor. Olympics and World Cup are huge.
