Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra reviewed progress of the
under-construction Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela
on 18 March. The stadium, located in the campus of the Biju Patnaik
University of Technology, will co-host the 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup
along with the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubanesvar. With a capacity of over
20,000, the Birsa Munda Stadium will be India's largest hockey stadium.
The public sector undertaking Industrial Infrastructure
Development Corporation [IDCO] has been given the responsibility to
build the stadium, which will include artificial turf for the main
matches, practice turfs, an advanced fitness centre and floodlights for
hosting matches at night. A star hotel with 210 double rooms will also
be built inside the stadium complex.
Other city development projects like smart city facilities, traffic
command centre, tribal museum, convention hall and a
market complex are being accelerated to be ready in time for the World
Cup. Road construction and city beautification are being undertaken on a
war footing. A new airport in Rourkela is expected to be operational
before the end of 2022.
Rourkela is located in Sundergarh district, which is considered one of
the nurseries of hockey in India. Former Indian hockey captain Dilip
Tirkey hails from Sundergarh. In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Amit Rohidas
in the men's team and Deep Grace Ekka in the women's team, were from
Sundergarh.
This will be the 4th Men's Hockey World Cup to be hosted by India,
with previous venues being Mumbai (1982), Delhi (2010) and Bhubaneswar
(2018).
