NEW DELHI: The I-League has taken a break and Dempo Sports Club who sit pretty at the top of the League Table with 43 points from 20 matches stay determined not to let the momentum slip. Coach Mauricio Alfonso, a former India International presently in charge of the team in Head Coach Armando Colaco’s absence spoke at length to <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.the-aiff.com"; onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.the-aiff.com</a><!-- w --> on their strategy for the remaining matches. EXCERPTS:

How would summarise Dempo’s progress?

With 14 wins, five losses and a draw, I think we have done well so far. It’s nice to stay at the top at the moment but looking back, I’d say we could have done a shade better.

Dempo were a bit inconsistent in last few rounds. What’s the reason?

It’s all about the nature of the sport. It’s a long league and fun stays that any team can lose to any on a given day. We try our best but can’t predict the results.

Is the cushion of six points at this stage enough to land you the title?

We need to keep in mind that we have some tough matches lined up when the action resumes. We need to be in perfect shape and try to win all our matches. The players also need to stay fit and keep away from injury.

What would be your strategy be?

The League has taken a break. The players would be back in Goa soon and we will have to assess their fitness levels. Once that’s done, we will strategise.

When do you expect Head Coach Armando Colaco getting back with the team?

He is recovering well after suffering a mild stroke. We pray for his speedy recovery and hopefully he will be back with the team when we play our first match after the break.
