Dempo Sports Club U-15 boys began their conquest of the 2013 Manchester United Premier Cup (MUPC) on a winning note as they blanked Pune FC juniors 2-0 at the Sesa Football Academy grounds at Shirsaim, Friday.
Pune FC tried to survive the on slaught of the Dempo players in the first half and were successful in keeping a clean score sheet until half time. They pushed hard for an early goal in the second half but were denied chances by the Dempo defence who refused to be unnerved.
Playing with their traditional 4-4-2 formation, Dempo strikers Salu Santos and Edwin Viegas traumatised the Pune colts. In one such move, Edwin’s powerful strike at the goal was stopped by hand by a Pune FC defender, for which Dempo earned a penalty and Pune were down sized to 10 players.
After going one goal up Dempo juniors officially sealed their victory in the dying minutes of the match when Salu Santos collected the ball from his right, moved in a scoring position, and hit a venomous shot that breezed past Pune FC goalkeeper.
Dempo will play their next group match against a Football Academy team from Madhya Pradesh on May 5.
Air India crushed Government Higher Secondary School, Kerala 5-0 in a South-West zone under-15 Manchester United Premier Cup All-India football tournament match at Sirsaim ground, Sirsaim, Saturday.
In the second match, Mumbai Football Club thumped Navrachna Sports Academy, Gujarat 4-0 while Narmada Sporting Football Club, MP got the better of Pune Football Club 2-0 in the third match.
Yesterday, Sporting Clube de Goa and Air India shared points in a 1-1 draw and Salgaocar Football Club and Mumbai Football Club played a goalless draw in the eveningen counter.
