Palian Arrows players have been called for India u23 camp right??? So after this SAFF championship is over Kovermans should start working with U23 team...as with the current batch no matter who coaches them...they wont unlearn what they have learnt all these years i.e kick the ball with all your might when under pressure....a few irreplaceable players from the current batch(Sunil , Nabi) should be retained and the the rest they should retire from international football.<div><br></div><div><br></div>
<br><div><br></div><div>dont think Arrows players would fare any better....Papas who is rated as a better coach than Wim, didn't really made them play great passing game..his achievement of course is the india u22 in AFC but after that in I League the team didnt really look that good</div>
i think the only way now seems to be play a direct organised game like Bob and Toal...get the results against SAFF, atleast that would save humiliation...and hope that after 10 years with academy boys you have something different...players who will come to NT for next 5 year or so probably wont be able to make much difference..
I think @Rudra has made some excellent points with regards to the style of play / tactics etc.<div><br></div><div>I'll just shed some behind the scenes info to liven up the discussions, at the same time trying not add too much fuel to @Akoi fire..</div><div><br></div><div>Wim was brought in by Rob Baan and they thought that if they conducted a few courses like the one last summer and tried to liaise with I-League coaches, they could encourage more I-League teams to play the way they would like the National & junior teams to play.</div><div>A lot of the "old school" coaches are pretty reluctant to adapt & are down right against "white coaches telling us how to do our jobs ! " </div><div><br></div><div>The teams that complied the best was unsurprisingly Prayag ( Dutch coach ), and given he had a close ear to Wim , a lot of his players were selected for the National team.</div><div><br></div><div>Wim has tried to pick players based on performance rather than reputation, but a lot of these players are just too stupid, stubborn or incompetent of adapting to an alternative style of play. </div><div>Dika for all his talent in the world is a 50% player ! he is great when his team has possession but goes missing when it is his turn to defend. </div><div>A problem that Trevor and numerous other coaches had with him. </div><div>Jeje falls into this category too.</div><div><br></div><div>At the international level if you are to play a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-1-1 ( or 4-5-1), there is a lot of emphasis on Full backs who can get up & down the flank and for the front men to press high up.</div><div><br></div><div>When your best full backs comprise of guys like Mohanraj, Nirmal Chettri, etc. it is always going to be a struggle to succeed with this. Asking them to hit long balls like Bob did is more suited to their skill sets</div><div>Hyped up players like Dika, Jeje ,Alwyn etc. who are no doubt skillful and dangerous in the final third, lack the discipline or drive to fulfill their defensive roles.</div><div><br></div><div>Then the decision of players like Mangi, Nabi , Pal, Nirmal to join the IMG league has also hampered the cause. Add to that the Prayag players uncertainty and lack of pre-season this was the worst preparation (mentally & physically) for a National team.</div><div><br></div><div>With Rob Baan's imminent departure, it seemed like Wim has also lost interest in his role here. His Bangalore camp was poor, lackluster practices, as he struggled to cope with the vast spectrum of fitness levels of his squad.</div><div>The pressure from AIFF ( IMG-R) to field their players, when the coach only wanted 'active' players also further devalued the position of the coach.</div><div><br></div><div>Its easy to point the finger at the Head Coach , but given the circumstances, I think he is on a hiding to nothing with this job</div>
To add to all the discussion going in here, why are we forgetting that chances were created by our team but our misery and humiliation are more due to our obsolete forward line. If Wims style and goal are to defend and possess but not score then he should stop coaching cause that is not football. When our players are unable to score at all then we can afford atleast one player who can score but cant defend (Dika). What is Wim's style ? To play stalemates, zero all and wait for penalties or the opponents to score own goals.
