Kolkata, Mar 2 (IBNS): Beverage major Coca-Cola India, in partnership with the Indian Football Association (IFA), has announced the roll out of the 2011 edition of the ‘Coca-Cola Elliot Shield Challenge Trophy’ - one of the oldest tournaments in the history of Indian Football.
The tournament will be played at four venues in Kolkata- Barasat stadium, Rabindra Sarovar Park, Vishwabharti Complex and Makardah stadium – between March 2 and March 13.
Thirty-two colleges across the city will compete in the country’s oldest football tournament which is a platform to identify talent and promote grassroots football in the country.
This is the second consecutive year that Coca-Cola India is partnering with IFA to stage the tournament.
Starting from Wednesday, a total of 31 matches will be played on a knock out basis between 32 college teams of Kolkata involving participation from more than 640 footballers.
All matches will be played in 11-A-side format and would also have roll on/roll off substitutes. Winners of the Coca-Cola Elliot Shield Trophy Tournament will be awarded a cash prize of Rs.75,000, while the runners-up would get Rs. 50,000.
According to Avinash Pant, Brand Director, Coca-Cola TMK, " This tournament is a seamless extension of our focus on football from the Under-16 stage to the college level. At the Under-16 level, we are involved with All India Football Federation to organize the Coca-Cola Mir Iqbal Hussain trophy.”
According to Utpal Kumar Ganguly, Secretary, Indian Football Association (IFA), " Not only has the tournament served as an excellent platform for young budding footballers to showcase their talent but it has also acted as a great tool for IFA to discover and identify talented footballers.”
The Elliot Shield is named after Colonel Elliot, British Administrator in Calcutta, an ardent football lover who donated the Elliot Shield Trophy to IFA.
The tournament generated keen competition and great fanfare among colleges such as Presidency, St. Xaviers, Vidyasagar etc. Presidency College has won the Shield eight times during 1894-1914, information unknown to many sports lover and college students of the present day.
All the participating teams in this year’s tournament will be divided into 4 groups, A, B, C and D and the tournament will be based on the following format:
Round-I: Matches to be played in knockout basis. Neutral referee would supervise each match. All matches would be of 90 minutes duration with two halves of 45 minutes each and a 15 minute break. In the event of a draw, winners would be decided based on penalty kicks.
Round- II: 2 Winning teams from each group will qualify for Round – II (Semi-Final Round), then they would play against each other (Knock Out Basis) and eventually two teams will enter the finals to be played on March 13th, 2011 at the Mohun bagan stadium.

intercollegiate tournaments in the history of Indian football and was
started in 1894 under the aegis of the India Football Association (IFA).
It is named after Colonel Elliot, British Administrator in Calcutta.
The Elliot Shield provided a platform to identify talent and promote
grassroots football in the country. Revived and revamped with the help
of Coca-Cola in 2010, the event required an identity and image that
would reflect the spirit of Kolkata, famous for its football frenzy,
while carefully balancing the legacy and heritage of the trophy.
Just curious after the recent college level youth discussion in the other thread as well as with the launch of the new FIFA Pilot Scheme ahead of the u17 WC in Bengal
Where is Viswa Bharati Complex?
Since when IFA is responsible for development of football anywhere?
