I-League: Mohun Bagan gaffer Sanjoy Sen compares Atletico de Kolkata to 'goat's third child'

Even before the merger has been finalised, sparks have flown off between potential intra-city rivals.

Sanjiv Goenka's comments on the Indian Super League champions' superiority has not gone too well with the Mariners' head coach.

The I-League 2017 still has two weeks to kick-off but Mohun Bagan head coach Sanjoy Sen addressed Indian Super League (ISL) 2016 champions Atletico de Kolkata's principal owner Sanjiv Goenka's comments which created a furore amongst football fans in the 'City of Joy'.

Industrialist Sanjiv Goenka, head investor of the consortium that runs the Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) franchise in the ISL has been vocal about his displeasure for the ISL to merge with the I-League and thus having more than one club from Kolkata on a number of occasions.

"ATK is probably much more popular than any other team in Kolkata. Every city has one team then why should Kolkata have two teams?" said Goenka after the Indian Rojiblancos' second ISL trimuph in it's three years of existence.

That comment however did not go well with a large number of football supporters from Kolkata and Mohun Bagan head coach also made sure his opinion was heard regarding the comment targeted at 'legacy clubs' such as East Bengal and Bagan themsleves.

"I have nothing to say regarding this. If I start speaking it will only raise a controversy as I have a habit of speaking my mind. I think Goenka understood it well enough so he spoke in that manner. It is only in the coming days that it will be understood who has more supporters"

"They can present their own perspective obviously. They are like the goat's third child who jump up and down. There are a lot like that so we don't worry about all this being said", said the coach of the defending Federation Cup champions.

Speaking with caution given his infamous remarks against the All India Football Federation (AIFF) last season landed him a four match touchline ban, Sen cracked down in his own witty analogical style.

With both leagues set to be merged from the 2017-18 season onwards, sparks have already been created between potential intra-city rivals but before that Mohun Bagan would be focused to regain their I-League title this season as they are in action against Goa's Churchill Brothers on the opening weekend at home.

Sen has also described the ISL as a 'circus'... he follows IFN, and is a fan of @deepakc B)

Mohun Bagan to invite Sanjiv Goenka to watch their I-League games

Mohun Bagan to invite Sanjiv Goenka to watch their I-League games

Internet Desk: The recent remarks from Atletico de Kolkata co-owner Sanjib Goenka has created a huge controversy in Bengal football as the ATK co-owner claimed his team to be the most popular one in West Bengal. Along with the stinging reactions from the AIFF Vice-President Subrata Dutta, former football legends like Chuni Goswami, Shyam Thapa, the fans too criticized Mr.Goenka for his opinion. The Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen too criticized the ATK officials for making such comments. But today, Mohun Bagan official Debasish Dutta has suddenly started going to the opposite direction as he said, “After our President Tutu Bose, it is Sanjiv Goenka only, who is spending in crores for Bengal football. Before criticizing him all the way, we should think about this as well.”

The remark from the Bagan official will no doubt create a new controversy as he added, “In fact, we have decided to invite Mr.Goenka to watch our I-League games, like he does when ATK plays in the ISL.” He continued, “I know what he said. But when you are spending in crores, you have the right to say a few things. But one thing we should all remember, Mr.Goenka’s all words are not negative. He is contributing a lot to the football in this state.”
The original reason to suddenly support Mr.Goenka might be because of the fact that the Mariners want to play their home matches of the I-League 2017 at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, which happens to be the home ground of ATK. Debasish Said, “We don’t wanna go to play our home games at the narrow lanes of Barasat. Rabindra Sarobar is our choice and we are trying to get that as well.”
Debasish seemed happy today in the press meet with the way they did the team build up despite lucrative offers for their players from different I-League teams. But he said, “We only can claim the credit if we can become the champions again. We did our part and signing Anas was a big success.”
Despite the successful effort to build a solid and set team, it is to see how the football fans from Bengal react to this new standpoint of the Mohun Bagan club administration on the burning controversy raised by the ATK co-owner.

Underlined line number three explains the reason for this turnaround...But Sen must realize that such comments will not endear him to Mohun Bagan fans, and the Bengal football public, in general...Spending crores for Bengal football....really!!?? :o :o

Father of Sanjiv Goenka Mr RP Goenka,Marwadi Businessman used to be known as "Takeover King" of Indian Business world. If he was alive today, I dont think that he would have been proud of such stupid statements by ATK.
  • LOLLLLL! Sanjoy Sen targets to win AFC Cup!!!

A club, which almost purposely loses a match in AFC, lest they have to build a team for the next round, wants to target AFC Cup!!! :D

Ticket price a new concern for Mohun Bagan, members may have to buy tickets as well

    MB

Kolkata: The countdown of the I-League 2017 has already begun and Mohun Bagan, as usual one of the top title contenders, have started to prepare accordingly. The diehard fans of the oldest I-League club of India, though are not at all happy with the proposed decision of the club officials that there will not be any free ticket this season for the home matches for them, not even for the official members of the club.

It is proposed that the members have to spend minimum Rs.100 and the other fans have to spend minimum Rs.200 to watch Sanjoy Sen’s men from the stands. Mohun Bagan will most likely be playing their home games at the newly renovated Rabindra Sarobar Stadium and proposal by the officials has not at all pleased their fans. Though the final decision is yet to be announced by the officials and they are still in discussions about it. Mohun Bagan’s honourable Secretary Mr.Anjan Mitra said, “We still need a couple of days more to take a final call about it.”

Though Mohun Bagan official Debashish Dutta tried to deal this issue in his usual style as he said, “Why are you guys taking this in that fashion! Mohun Bagan fans would gleefully “donate” that money for the sake of the club”. It is to see how the fans react to their main football recruiter.

Meanwhile, after the training, star players like Prabir Das, Pritam Kotal were seemed to be blooming in confidence. Prabir said, “We are not thinking about East Bengal at all. Our entire focus is on our team. I am ready to play wherever our coach wants me to play. Our ultimate focus is to regain the I-League title.” Pritam on the other hand revealed his target of the season as he said, “We have three targets this season, The I-League, Federation Cup and the AFC Cup. We want to give equal importance to all three competitions. We have even a better side compare to the last season. But at the same time, I believe the new teams like Minerva Punjab, Chennai City are also equally good like the other existing teams.” He added, “Who would have thought that Bengaluru FC would win the I-League in their very first appearance? But they did. Same thing can be done by the new franchises as well. We shouldn’t underestimate them”, he signs off.

But above anything else, it’s the ticket price which is the main concern for the Mohun Bagan members and fans ahead of the I-League.
