Ever since starring in the Goal
movie, Bollywood screen idol
John Abraham has been widely
acclaimed as the ambassador of
Indian football. Whether it was
opening the I-League in 2007 or
promoting last year’s South
African World Cup, but this time
Goan football could be the next
proud beneficiaries of the John
Abraham brand. John was at the
Duler Stadium, Mapusa on
Wednesday filming for a face
cream commercial.
John took a moment out from
his busy shooting schedule to
interact with the former GFA
general secretary Savio Messias
as well as GFA vice-presidents,
Lavino Rebello and Elvis Gomes.
Walking over with his
intimidating broad muscular
shoulders, looking like a heavy
weight boxer making his way
into a ring for a title fight, he
gave his trade mark cheeky grin
and proclaimed he would do
what ever takes to give football
a boost in the country.
John was asked by Savio on his
future plans in promoting
football. He replied that he would
not be getting involved with the
proposed Baichung Bhutia
academy after all. “Baichung is a
great guy, but he has now got a
Dubai based investor to help
fund the project, so I have pulled
out,” remarked John.
GFA senior vice-president Elvis
Gomes asked if there was any
chance of doing something for
Goan football. John's answer was
favorable. He asked his publicist
to swap contacts with hard
working Lavinio who was
instrumental in bringing the
shooting to Mapusa in the first
place.
Johnsaid that Indian football is
on the right track after the IMG/
Reliance deal with the AIFF and
he felt an IPL style football
revolution is on its way and he
would love to be involved in a
big way. John also explained
how he would be following next
month's I-League Second
Division with great interest.
