The oldest football league of the country, the
CFL (Premier Division-A Group) starts on Wednesday, 27th July 2016. Ten teams
will be taking part in the competition: East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting, Army
XI, Bhawanipore, Southern Samity, United Sports Club, Peerless, George
Telegraph, Tollygunge Agragami.
As is known, East Bengal is going all out for the 'hepta' ( a record of winning the League seven times in a row) while Mohun Bagan are looking to build a strong support base by playing a relatively inexperienced side consisting mainly of local players. The foreigners for East Bengal will be their South Korean missile Do-Dong and the British defender, Callum Angus. Another foreigner is yet to be decided.
Mohun Bagan will be relying on the foreign duo of Daryl Duffy--the Scottish goal-machine and the English defender, Daniel Seaborne. Each team will play against each other once. There is no doubt that the derby--the East Bengal-Mohun Bagan encounter--remains the most anticipated, though this time there have been doubts about whether Mohun Bagan would be playing in it, as the club officials have demanded a share of the television rights, something not entertained by the IFA as yet.
There will be a new television sponsor this year--ETV Bangla, which will telecast 30 matches including all the matches of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. The kick-off times are 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The so-called small teams, consisting of experienced local players and some veteran foreigners, are no pushovers and expect the likes of Army XI, Tollygunge Agragami, United Sports, Southern Samity and Aryan and certainly Mohammedan Sporting to give the big two a run for their money. So let the discussions begin!!
