The Bordoloi Trophy is one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the country. Beginning in 1952, its popularity soared in the sixties, seventies and nineties when the who’s who of Indian football descended on Guwahati every year to be a part of this tourney. The tournament was given a massive boost by the presence of the ‘Big 3’ from Kolkata, who used to have made it a habit of laying their hands on the trophy. Mohun Bagan has won this trophy seven times---the most by any club, though East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting have been no less fortunate, both having been crowned champions five times. The profile of the Bordoloi trophy was further beefed up by the participation of foreign teams. Bangkok Port Authority (Thailand) was one of the standout teams, having won the crown once and finishing runners-up once. Iranian and Uzbekistan also showcased their skills in the tournament. However, the nineties witnessed a dip in the popularity of this tournament, with the big clubs shying away from playing here. The timing of the Bordoloi trophy might have worked in its disadvantage, as most of the top teams remain busy playing in the I-League and other major tournaments during this time.
However, this time the tournament is expected to get a facelift with the organizers, Guwahati FC, leaving no stone unturned to make it a success. As the Managing Director of Guwahati FC says, ‘It will be a fanfare both inside and outside the stadium. We will make Nehru Stadium a place to hang out with friends and family. If 30,000 people can fill up Indian Super League matches than why not Bordoloi Trophy? We will create the atmosphere…. It will have coffee and fast food joints, popcorn, snacks and soft drink bars on all match days. We will also engage Bollywood and Assamese film industry artistes to perform during the breaks.’ Also the prize money this year has been hiked to Rs. 20, 00, 000 to lure the big teams of the country and the timings of most of the matches have been kept at 7 p.m for the benefits of the students and office-goers.
Here’s wishing one of the country’s most heritage tournament the very best!
