Kolkata: Willis Deon Plaza, the Trinidad & Tobago international has suddenly become the new heart-throb of the Kingfisher East Bengal FC fans as the Caribbean forward has been in lethal form of late and scored two brilliant goals against Mumbai FC in the last Hero I-League game at the Barasat Stadium on Wednesday.
Today, after the training session, the forward seemed very much in mood in a friendly interaction with the media. From Shah Rukh Khan to Kolkata derby, Plaza seemed as comfortable as his playing style.
Here goes the conversation:
Q:You will play Chennai City FC tomorrow. Are you confident of scoring again?
Plaza: I don’t know. Only the God knows. I’m trying to know the players, the teams everyday and trying to improve every time.
Q:Do you have any idea about the famous Kolkata Deby?
Plaza: The last time when my country mate Cornell Glen scored in the Kolkata derby, our football Federation uploaded the clip on YouTube. I have seen the excitement there.
Q: Whom do you want to dedicate, if you score in the Kolkata derby?
Plaza: I want to dedicate Stephen Abarowei. In fact, all the goals which I’m scoring are being dedicated to Stephen.
Q: Will there be any “Shah Rukh Khan celebration” in the Kolkata derby?
Plaza: Well, Shah Rukh is not like Salman Khan. Shah Rukh does his job silently. He doesn’t like to expose too much. He acts smoothly till the end. I want to do the same as well against Mohun Bagan. No special celebration, I just want to do my work.
Q: How is the derby atmosphere in your country?
Plaza: I’m the king there.
Q:You remind more of the former East Bengal foreigner Yusuf Yakubu. Do you know him?
Plaza: I don’t know him. So I can’t comment.
Q:Are you having any difficulty in adjusting to the Indian condition?
Plaza: Trinidad’s one third popularity are Indians. Thus I’m well aware of the food habits, atmosphere. Though I go to bed early and regularly get up at 3:30am in the morning.
Q:The sweets here in Kolkata are famous. Have you tasted it?
Plaza: Yes I heard but yet to taste it.
Q:Have you ever been any of the tourist spots in Kolkata?
Plaza: Yes, I was there at the Alipore Zoo, but only for 10 minutes. (Smiles)
East Bengal have been completely throttled by CCFC's tactics today...their defence, particularly Echezona, has been superb...EB too have been very wasteful, particulary Ralte and Wedson...Robin Singh needs to be subbed after the break
Though EB managed to win, they failed to get a grip on the match...they were patchy at times, mispasses were plenty and the incisiveness seemed to be lacking...but good that they managed to win on a bad day, like Mohun Bagan yesterday...Robin Gurung impressed me today...as a defensive option , he seems to be a much better bet than Bheke...CCFC managed to give them a scare, though lack of finishing by their strikers and inexperience did them in

Kolkata: The wait gets over as East Bengal’s newly recruited Australian forward Chris Payne to arrive at Kolkata tomorrow and will officially sign for the Red and Gold brigade on Saturday ahead of the Kolkata derby.
Chris will also be included in the twenty men East Bengal squad which will be travelling to Siliguri for playing the first leg of the Kolkata Derby and the home game against Shillong Lajong at the Kanchenjunga Stadium.
Though it is learnt that Chris will not be a part of the eighteen men squad against Mohun Bagan and will watch the game from the stands. But he is going to be included in the 20 men squad as he might feature in the game against Shillong Lajong after the derby.
Payne will replace Kyrgyz international Ildar Amirov as he failed to impress the coach and the team management in his short tenure. The 26-year-old Payne was plying his trade for Sydney United 58 FC, a semi-professional football club in New South Wales. He has previously played for A-League outfits Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets.
