The Indian boxing contingent on Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief after it escaped any major sanction for use of syringes at the Commonwealth Games village by its doctor Amol Patil, who was let off with a reprimand for not disposing the needles as per stipulated procedure.
Hearing a complaint filed by the medical commission of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), the CGF Court ruled that Dr. Patil had erred in not disposing the syringes as mandated by the ‘No Needle Policy’ of the Games.
Dr. Patil had administered a Vitamin B complex injection to an athlete who was feeling unwell.
“Under the No Needle Policy, needles are required to be stored in a central secured location, access to which is restricted to authorised medical personnel of the CGA delegation. The needles in question were not disposed of until he had made two trips to the Polyclinic,” the CGF said in a statement.
“In the circumstances, the Federation Court’s decision is that CGF should issue a strong written reprimand to the Doctor for the breaches.
“A copy of the letter of reprimand should be served on the Chef de Mission of the Indian Team who should be advised to ensure that no further infractions of CGF Policies occur by any member of the Indian Team,” it added.
For Tommorrow,i am Expecting One Gold Medal from Mirabai Chanu for sure in 48kg category weightlifting.I am expecting her to stomp the field. She is one of the Definite Medal contender for Olympics 2020 so Commonwealth should be easy for her.
In Men"s Weightlifting categories for tomorrow, medal is a possibility but Gold will be difficult.
Rest,I am excited to see how our Track Cycling contingent performs.I feel they can surprise few heads.
Data check: India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games over the years explained in five charts
A look at which sport and which disciplines Indian athletes have performed consistently well in
The Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast is upon us. Historically, the CWG has been India’s favourite hunting ground in the international arena, and serves as a platform for Olympic preparation.
Since the inception of the games in 1930, India has won 438 medals with nearly half of these medals coming in the last three games. India’s most successful games were in 2010 at New Delhi, hauling in 101 medals across disciplines and finishing second on the medals tally for the first and only time so far.
The majority of India’s medals come from a select few sports. India’s shooters have won 120 medals since 1982 and are the most successful when it comes to the quadrennial event. A significant portion of these medals have come in team events. And given shooting is a sport India has excelled in internationally on a regular basis, across multiple disciplines, means this should come as no surprise.
India has also excelled in weightlifting and wrestling at the games, taking a sizeable chunk of the medals over the years.
India’s first medal at the games was won by Rashid Anwar. He won the bronze medal in welterweight wrestling at the 1930 games.
By and large, the variation of sports is few and far between. India’s medals have come predominantly from shooting, weightlifting and wrestling events. Since the turn of the century, India has found success with it’s singles badminton players. This can be seen not only at the Commonwealth Games, but also at the world stage. And in Gold Coast, we have arguably the strongest contingent of Indian badminton players at the games.
An anomaly of sorts is India’s success in the discus throw event. Four Indian athletes have won eight medals since the 2002 games. Vikas Gowda has won two medals winning the gold at Glasgow and Seema Punia has won three medals, but has failed to finish on the top of the podium.
Even the most successful athletes are restricted to the shooters, weightlifters and wrestlers. Ten shooters have won more four or more medals at the games. Jaspal Rana has won 15 medals in his shooting career.
Two weightlifters feature in the list of most successful Indian athletes at the games - one that also sees paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal make an appearance.
Gender break up of Indian medallists at the games shows that traditionally men have dominated when it comes to podium finishes, but as we explained in an earlier data story, Indian women have consistently upped their performances since the turn of the century - as can be seen by 36 medals overall in the Delhi Games.
Gururaja wins India's First Medal(Silver) in Men's 56 kg Category.
Indian Women's Hockey Team lost 3-2 to Wales.Indian Women's Hockey Team is really bad.We are a long way behind in terms of Physical side. Also,we are not that great in terms of Basic skills as well.
Mirabai chanu wins gold beating her previous best by 2kg in total and 1 kg each in snatch and clean & jerk and she was 26 kg clear of silver medalist, she lifted 196 in total (86 in snatch and 110 in c&j) it was really pleasure watching her creating such high standards, though competition level was very low
I agree that weightlifting at Commonwealth level is not the strongest but she is in a league of her own.She is just 23.
Any athletes performance could be judged by the Total which she has lifted and how does the total ranked in the world.
Weightlifting for Women"s started from 2000 Olympics which means there have been 5 Olympics since Weightlifting for Women"s started.2000,2004,2008,2012,2016.
Her Total of 196kg would have been good enough to win a medal in any of the Olympics barring the 2004 Olympics, where she would have come 4th.
So,this means that she is not just Commonwealth Level Weightlifter, which unfortunately many of our lifters are.She is a TOP TOP World class Lifter and she proved it by winning the World Championship Gold Medal in 2017.In World Championships, she lifted 194 kg,so an increase of 2 kg in such a short time is mindblowing. She is just 23yrs so she is still maturing. So,considering, the lack of competition she could have opted lesser weights but she deicded otherwise which shows her mentality(ruthlessness).
Asian Games will provide her with world class competition.Winning a medal in Asian games is almost equal to winning a medal at World event when it comes to Badminton,Weightlifting. So,it remains to be seen how she does there.A medal there would be ideal.
I have absolutely no doubt, that come the 2020 Olympics she will be one of our Firmest Medal Contenders.
All the best to her and i am certainly very very proud of Mirabai Chanu.
