Calcutta: Argentina’s World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona’s son-in-law Sergio Aguero, Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez and their national teammates will play an international friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium here on September 2.
“They will play against a top European or an Asian team,” Celebrity Management Group head Bhaswar Goswami said on Monday.
“September 2 to 6, 2011, in the football calendar, is for Fifa’s international matches. We have signed a deal with Argentina. They have asked for a top-level opposition.
“We are trying to get World Cup champions Spain, Germany or Portugal. But talks are on at a very primary level. If we don’t get one of these three teams then we will go for a top-level Asian team,” he added.
Sources, however, said either Japan or Korea is on the radar.
Portugal are very unlikely since Argentina will be playing the Cristiano Ronaldo-led side this Wednesday.
And in between September 2 and 6, both Portugal and Germany will be playing European qualifiers. Spain have no such fixture. So if Calcuttans are lucky, they may get to see a Messi and Andreas Iniesta duel.
Messi, in fact, joins a long list of global football stars, who have spelled their charm on the City of Joy.
From Zico, as national coach of Japan, Oliver Kahn, playing his last match for Bayern Munich, Maradona, Lothar Matthaus to 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan, Calcutta has seen a lot of stars in the past seven years.
Before that Brazilian legend Pele had come to play with Cosmos in 1977. Roger Milla, the star of 1990 World Cup, also played at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Messi, the Barcelona star, scored a hattrick against Atletico Madrid last Saturday.
Even though he has won everything in club football, Leo, as his teammates call him, has not been a success in the Argentina shirt.
In last year’s World Cup, Argentina crashed out in the quarter finals losing to Germany and Messi failed to score even one goal in the tournament. Well, that was under Maradona.
But now, with Sergio Batista at the helm, he is slowly getting his rhythm back.
He scored a gem of a goal against Brazil in a friendly in Doha on November 17 last year.
And, come September 2, let’s hope Messi scores another cracker of a goal.

Keeping my fingers crossed for an Argentina-Spain clash... Excellent for promoting the game further in a nation starved of High-Quality, pulsating, engrossing football...
Well, according to the initial reports that is the case...unless there are some last minute changes in plans...
But even if he comes, we shouldn't be very surprised, big players like - Kahn, Forlan, Maradona all have come to Kolkata before
