Global sportswear giant Nike Monday kicked off its India finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup (MUPC), an initiative to unearth football talent at the grass root level.

The finals will run through till 24 May at Bharati Vidyapeeth Education Complex, Satara Road, Dhankawadi in Pune and the winner of the MUPC India leg will earn a spot in the regional Finals to be held in Thailand later this year.

The under-15 level tournament enables youngsters to consider football as a career option. The tournament has provided football obsessed teens in India an opportunity to compete on an international stage, bridging language and cultural barriers through sport.

In its 6th edition, MUPC global saw over 9000 teams from 43 countries taking part. This year, U-15 teams from India took part with 18 teams making it to the finals.

“Nike- MUPC is an effort to provide young footballers an opportunity to compete and show case their talent. Considering the success of the Nike-MUPC over the years, we look to building on the strengths of this tournament each year in order to amplify India’s budding football talent. The AIFF has been one of our greatest supporters and we continue to foster this relationship and grow from strength to strength,” says Sanjay Gangopadhyay, marketing director, Nike India Pvt Ltd.

Being a part of the Nike- MUPC India Finals, AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said, "Football in India is gaining huge popularity amongst the youngsters today. It is the tournaments like this that pave the way for the sport creating a fan base. This annual event is also an excellent opportunity for India to prove itself as a pool of talent for football."

"Nike- MUPC tournament is going to be a competitive one and where the youngsters can learn a lot. I hope this continues and that footballers in India keep getting opportunities to make it big," felt Indian football team captain Bhaichung Bhutia.

MUPC started out as a regional tournament in 1993 and has grown into one of the largest and best known football events of its kind. Over one million players have taken part, with over 9,000 teams from more than 43 countries competing this year.

The World Finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup will be staged in Manchester where 20 of the best U-15s teams from around the world will compete in August.
