Talking Point: Can Chennaiyin FC breach the defences of Mumbai City FC?
Mumbai City FC’s defence has proven their mettle
Mumbai City FC have not conceded a single goal from open play this season, owing to some brave goalkeeping by Amrinder Singh. The Mumbai City shot-stopper has come to the fore with three clean sheets in last three matches and a strong save percentage of 90%. The skipper is well supported by Mourtada Fall. In his three starts for the club, Fall has 13 clearances, 11 interceptions and a formidable passing accuracy of 83.57%. Then there is Mohamed Rakip who has had some wonderful games recently. Mumbai will bank on these to keep up their good work against the Marina Machans as well.
The Islanders have a very strong squad depth
During the squad revamp led by Sergio Lobera, the Islanders brought in a number of star players, giving the side a lot of depth. Mumbai City have a lethal frontline led by Bartholomew Ogbeche and Adam le Fondre. They are ably supported on the wings by Cy Goddard, who has attempted 11 dribbles, with 10 of them being successful. Meanwhile, Ahmed Jahouh’s 27 tackles are also the highest for Mumbai City. In truth, Chennaiyin might find it hard to stop Mumbai City.
Battle between Crivellaro and Boumous
Both sides love to keep possession and the onus of creating chances will fall on Rafael Crivellaro for Chennaiyin FC and Hugo Boumous for Mumbai City FC. While Boumous already has two assists to his name this season, Crivellaro is yet to register one, which might be a cause for concern for head coach Csaba Laszlo. The scales are in favour of Boumous though, with Crivellaro yet to produce a single goal contribution against the Islanders, while Boumous has one goal and two assists in five matches against Chennaiyin during his time with FC Goa.
Vishal Kaith going into the Mumbai City penalty box to help his attackers in the last minutes reminded me of Gurpreet's similar misadventure against Prayag United in 2012. Luckily, there was no Kayne Vincent around to further embarrass CFC.
