I can't speak for the rumor veracity of Transfermarkt, but they are one of the organizations that BUYS information such as transfer fee information from respective authorities. It may take their editors time to update the transfer fee values, but they are accurate for the information they buy.
In addition, their estimated valuations of transfer fee of players are actually used in court to settle disputes buy clubs, leagues and even UEFA. There is a recent New York Times article on this I can't be bothered to search for at this moment.
So in short, for some things, Transfermarkt is the standard.
