Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s U23 squad secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kalighat in their Calcutta Football League (CFL) encounter held in Kalyani on Tuesday.
MBSG got off to a flying start, with 21-year-old Pasang Tamang finding the back of the net just three minutes into the match, giving his side an early lead.
However, Kalighat responded with determination, and Surajit Halder levelled the score in the 18th minute, leaving both teams vying for control.
The second half saw continued intensity from both sides. It was Karan Rai who ultimately broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, scoring the decisive goal that clinched all three points for Mohun Bagan SG.
With this win MBSG climbed to third in the standings with 10 points from five matches, while Kalighat moved down to ninth place.
In its next match, Mohun Bagan will lock horns with arch-rival East Bengal on July 19.
In the other CFL match of the day, Measurers won 2-1 against Calcutta Custom
In another match, Aryan Club defeated Bhawanipore FC 1-0
Aryan's lone goal was scored by Raju Oraon, who had lost his father yesterday. Taking inspiration from Pathachakra FC's goalkeeper, Arnab Das, who had taken the field after his mother passed away 48 hours prior to the match and put in a stellar performance against East Bengal a few days back (his team eventually won the match 1-0), Raju started the match in spite of the demise of his father and scored the lone goal which provided some much needed oxygen to his team, which was languishing at the bottom of the table without a single win.
The Calcutta Football League might have lost much of its prestige, but the heroic struggles of the Arnabs and the Rajus keeps much of its spirit alive.
East Bengal will take on Mohun Bagan at the Kalyani Stadium tomorrow (5: 30 p.m.)
EB have registered 6 players of their senior team for this match--Debjit Majumder, David Lalhlansanga, Edmund Lalrindika, Martand Raina, Mark Zothanpuia and Ramsanga Tlaichhun
Mohun Bagan are in the third place with 10 points from 5 matches (win-3, draw-1, loss-1) are on the 8th spot with 5 points from 4 matches (win-1, draw-2, loss-1)
EB took the lead in the first half through goals by Jesin TK and Sayan Banerjee; MB bounced back in the second half with two goals by Leewan Castanha and Kiyan Nassiri but David Lalhlansanga scored the third goal for the Red and Gold brigade to seal the win
