Why? If they are good enough then they should play.
Okay, let me explain. Football in modern times is a game played on money. Fans however like to focus on the on-field product only. Now, I am not saying that Football is now only a money game. It is 50/50.
Look at the top leagues in the world. Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga. Asian ones like J. League, K-League, and A-League. American one in MLS. What do they all have in common? They are mega rich. Even other leagues like Ligue 1, Serie A, Primeria League, Russian Premier League, Eredivisie, Belgian Pro League, Swiss League, Brazilian Serie A, Argentina Primeria League, and Liga MX (Mexico) are cash rich.
Football is turning into the sport where, if you have the money, you will be successful. Before that was not true. An example would be the famous Hungerian team and Yugoslavia teams of the 1950s. Both countries did not have rich (for that time) domestic football systems yet they dominated. Today that would never happen.
Yes, you have that good old upset but it will never be at the constant that it was back in the earlier days of what I call "Pre-SKY TV football" (Before the television channel in England SKY TV started in 1992).
Look at the Champions League, you used to have teams from Yugoslavia, Scotland, Sweden, Romania, Netherlands, and Hungary do so well in the Champions League on a constant time. Since the 1990s that has all changed and now it is dominated by the mega-rich.
Look at Asia. Would the West Asian countries be where they are without the money of sheiks. Who knew about Qatar before 2010? No one.
That is why money is of importance now. You need it to be a good footballing nation. NONE of the current I-League clubs have the money at the moment. We have no sponsors, no proper stadiums, no proper coaching... nothing.
It is great to say we need to develop a club at youth level and then grow it to the I-League but in the end it is about the money. How can you develop at youth level without the money? Who will teach the coaches? Who will pay for the infrastructure? etc etc. So many expenses.
That is why I laughed with the Goan clubs rejected the idea of no pro/rel because it would stunt development. I said "What development?". We just lost to Myanmar and barely beat Taiwan. How can you convince me that no pro/rel will end development when there is no development in the first place.
Same with Brahmanand Shankhwalker's comments. WTF are you talking about. More tournaments? Why? Who will fund these tournaments? Who will schedule it all out? WHO WILL COACH A PROPER WAY OF YOUTH COACHING?
For god's sake, East Bengal, a club with so many sponsors, complained about the expenses of playing in the AFC Cup. How can we expect them to spend on a youth academy when they complain about AFC Cup expenses.
That is why we need to do away with relegation. We need corporates in Indian football and hopefully corporates wont be afraid of investing in United Sikkim with the worry that if they are relegated all their investment is wasted.
