Given that India have already booked their spot in next year’s AFC Challenge Cup on the back of their consecutive victories over Chinese Taipei and Pakistan, coach Bob Houghton is expected to rest the star players against Turkmenistan and start with those who haven’t got a look in.
Turkmenistan, who have also made the cut from Group B, shall look to end the league qualifiers on a high as the Indians.
“It’s good to have already qualified as we came here (Malaysia) to qualify. It does give us opportunity to play the younger boys which is very exciting as they probably will be playing the best team (Turkmenistan) of the three.
“It will be a real test for these young ones and that’s why we brought them here. So Jeje, Anwar and Subrata Paul will play and otherwise it be the boys who have not played as yet,” said Houghton.
The Englishman showered special praise on in-form strike Jeje Lalpekhlua for his exceptional display for the national team.
“We should give Jeje congratulations for his performance here… for his three goals in two games and scoring in his debut for the national team.
“To add to this, the four goals he scored in the last round of the I League (against Air India) makes it seven goals in three games. So it’s a great run of form,” he concluded.
