The format of first NFL was different than regular league formats. There were two groups of 6 teams and top four from each group qualified to play in final round robin league which JCT won. The rules were bottom two teams wouldn't be allowed in 1998-99 NFL. Mohun Bagan finished second from bottom in Grp B but was still allowed in next year's league. It was alleged that Mohun Bagan official Gaju Basu influenced AIFF to include MB..MB ended up winning NFL.

Well, after looking at videos of the 1997-98 season with Bagan it looks like MB staying was good. Kolkata football was doing great at that time.

i never used to follow the game at that time so was a good informative article for me as well to know how good/bad was our league at that time as well along the clubs as well

I would say the league was better. We had the balls not to give in to there demands. Today if say Air India wanted something we would kiss there ass and give it to them.
