CHONBURI FC geared up for AFC Cup

Chonburi: Chonburi geared up nicely for their forthcoming AFC Cup 2011 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Thai Port as the Sharks kicked-off the new Thailand Premier League season in style on Sunday.

Chonburi, who travel to India to take on East Bengal in their AFC Cup Group H opener on March 1, made a blistering start to the first domestic fixture by taking a second-minute lead courtesy of captain Pipob On-mo.

Despite dominating large periods of the match the home side had to wait until the 71st minute to build on their early advantage with Japanese midfielder Kazuto Kuchida firing home the rebound after Therdsak Chaiman’s free-kick struck the crossbar.

The match marked the first league fixture at the brand new Chonburi Stadium, which will be used for the Thai FA Cup champions’ AFC Cup home games.

Chonburi’s first continental fixture at the venue will be the March 16 encounter with Hong Kong’s South China.

Dempo SC vs Al-Tilal(Yemen) Preview :-

Pune: Dempo Sports Club coach Armando Colaco has called on his team to put the disappointment of missing out on a cherished 2011 AFC Champions League berth behind them and instead focus on “going the distance” in the AFC Cup.

Dempo lost 2-0 Al Sadd of Qatar in a 2011 AFC Champions League playoff encounter in Doha, a match Colaco believes they could have won with a little bit more fortune.

“We were distinctly unlucky against Al Sadd but there is no point crying over it. Instead, we need to focus on the AFC Cup,” said Colaco.

“The AFC Cup is one tournament we have done well in the past four seasons. This time we are stronger than ever before. I believe we can go the distance this time around.”

Dempo open their Group A campaign against Al Tilal of Yemen at the Shiv Chhatrapathi Sports Complex in Pune on Tuesday.

Even though they are playing 600 kilometres away from their home ground and outside the state’s borders, Colaco remained optimistic the I-League champions can cope with the difficult circumstances.

“It would have been much better if we were playing in front of our home crowd at Fatorda in Goa but we have been forced to play here because our stadium has no floodlights. It’s a huge setback,” he admitted.

“The schedule has been taxing but this is part and parcel of professional football. The boys understand that every time they take the field, whether it’s a local, national or international match, they need to put their best foot forward.”

Unlike Colaco, Al Tilal head coach Seyoum Kebede Eshetu has no prior AFC Cup experience with his side to call upon while the domestic league has also just got under way.

As such, he is wary of the threat Dempo can pose to his men and their continental ambitions.

“This is the first time that I have led Al Tilal in the AFC Cup. It’s a new experience and we are ready for this,” said the Ethiopian.

“It will be a tough match considering the fact that Dempo are playing at home. They have always been a strong side.

“I have seen the video of Dempo’s AFC Champions League playoff against Al Sadd and I must confess that they were equal to the challenge. They are strong.”
