EXCLUSIVE: Goan giants Churchill Brothers look to join ISL from next season

As the Indian Super League (ISL) approaches its fag end of the ongoing season, it seems they have already started planning for the upcoming season in full swing. Reportedly, the new season is expected to bring some changes in the number of the match structure with a chance of some teams playing three legs instead of two.

Now, it seems the number of teams may also increase with Goan giants Churchill Brothers FC planning to enter the country’s top league, The Bridge understands.

The Margao-based football club has been one of the leading flag bearers in Indian football since 1988. Be it in the National Football League of the 90s or the I-League, Churchill has come up with dominant performances and has achieved a lot of success through the years. With two I-League titles and more than a couple of runners-up feat, the Alemao Churchill-owned side is one of the most successful clubs in the country as they continue to be a supply line for the Indian national team.

Sources close to the development can confirm that the ISL management has given an initial nod to the club’s proposal and has shown keen interest in their further plans. Currently, the Churchill management is in talks with potential foreign sponsors and possible tie-ups as they hope to enter the premier league by next season. The club has also come up with suggestions of changing their name and has proposed to play as South Goa Churchill Brothers FC if they get an entry.

With FSDL’s initial nod to this move, it appears that changes will be made in the league’s one-city-one-team rule. As the league looks to grow, however, East Bengal are struggling to get past their present turmoil and chances of having the Kolkata derby in ISL are slim. Consequently, the ISL is in thoughts of developing a Goan derby soon as they aspire to increase the league’s engagement in the coming years.

So basically all the willing IL teams will be accommodated in ISL and IL will be officially 2nd tier. Not bad if in 3-4 years time they start the pro rel also.

Indian football: Delhi could finally get a team in the I-League

I-League is likely to welcome a new club next season in place of Mohun Bagan who are set to enter the ISL...

Mainstream football could return to Delhi next season, after a hiatus of a year.

Delhi currently do not have any team playing in the Indian Super League (ISL) or I-League after Delhi Dynamos shifted bases to Odisha at the start of the ongoing season while Indian Arrows also moved away from the national capital.

However, with a spot opening up in the I-League after Mohun Bagan's merger with ISL side ATK, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has stepped up efforts to ensure the I-League does not suffer in terms of the number of participating teams.

The Indian FA are all set to invite bids for that vacant spot in the I-League and Delhi-based Sudeva Football Club are one of the front-runners to submit the bid.

"Yes, we are interested in playing the I-League. If the AIFF invites bids, we are looking to submit our case," Sudeva FC owner Anuj Gupta told Goal.

Delhi state league team Sudeva FC has played in the I-League second division and has fielded teams in the age-category tournaments of the AIFF and could now take step up into the I-League from the 2020-21 season. The ongoing season of I-League has 11 clubs which includes AIFF's developmental side Indian Arrows.

In 2018, Sudeva acquired 85 per cent stake in Spanish third division club Olimpic de Xativa and from their association, young footballers have since been sent to Spain for exposure. Recently, in August 2019, three kids from the Sudeva Football Academy were sent to the Spanish club for training.

I-League's last corporate entry was Gokulam Kerala two years ago. The Malabarians have steadily built a strong team and a name for themselves and the upcoming new entrant will be hoping to take that route as well.

The development should be a boost for football in Delhi.
