‘priority’ sports will receive funding for all national and zonal championships, ranking and qualifying tournaments for major competitions and any other events as decided by a committee headed by the sports secretary
The problem is not the number of games, yes, it can be increased but lets look at it like this. There is a certain formula to all this, not just playing a high number of games. Look at the non-professional leagues in England where teams play around 40-50 games a season yet they are amateur. The problem with the Federation Cup was the poor organization. Playing in just 2 stadiums, playing games each 2-3 days, and not having the proper facilities or help to make it worth it for the players and their health.
The Indian Super League did the same and we saw the reports come out in November about fatigue. And we can't just have the games come in between match-days. We play on a tight schedule already with the Federation Cup and some teams still believe in playing first-team players in useless tournaments such as the state leagues and IFA Shield.
Many of our players on the national team already play a high number of games a season and taking away the Federation Cup will believe it or not do us good in the short-term. Many players have barely gotten breaks since last year!
As for the Federation Cup leaving, good riddance. It was never really a proper knock-out tournament and despite everyones dreams of it coming one, it wasn't. Perhaps now we can work towards having a proper knock-out FA Cup style tournament one day. We are already seeing some new state leagues show up like the Mizoram Premier League and a new one with the Malabar Premier League. Goa is still going well with the Goa Pro League. Eventually we could start a proper tournament with qualifiers for the tournament proper coming from these leagues.
Will the ISL franchises release players for the WCQ which are scheduled during ISL? Or would they take I-League's window for ISL? Something's gotta give and my guess would be I-League. I have a gut feeling that next season is the last of I-League as we know it.
