Mumbai : With the start of the football season in Mumbai, the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) has every reason to rejoice.
The managing committee announced that league matches will be held at the Andheri Sports Complex also known as Shahaji Raje Krida Sankul, a multi-purpose facility in the western facility during the upcoming season.
With the Andheri Sports Complex now at MDFA’s disposal, it has come as a great relief to the organisers while scheduling the venues for the Elite Division and the Super Division match.
The 14-team Elite Division League will kick off from the first week of September and the matches will be played at Cooperage as well as at the Andheri Sports Complex.
The Super Division League which consists of 27 teams is scheduled to commence a month later and will also be played at both these venues.
While announcing the MDFA’s new plans for the season 2015-2016, it was announced a total of 66 teams divided into nine groups will participate in the league and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the play-offs.
Subsequently, the First Division League will commence from the third week of August. The league will consist of 54 teams divided into six groups and the top two teams will progress to the play-offs.
The season for the Elite Division teams will commence with the Independence Cup, a 9-a-side knock out tournament to be played at the St. Xavier’s Ground, Parel on Friday, August 14-15.
The rd Division League comprising of 96 teams is expected to start at the K.J. Somaiya College ground, Chunabatti from October. The Women’s League with 14 teams will be conducted at the Karnatak SA ground, Cross Maidan from January, 2016. The MDFA is also actively considering starting of a Professional League.
The pro league should be for Maharashtra hence to be organised by WIFA.....but that is headed by PP so until he sees a few 100 crores as his personal cut money...no chance of that ever happening.
Highly unlikely but MLS clubs based in NY , LA, Chicago should consider this...loads of Indians there. Could well be a decent crowd puller if properly planned and promoted imo.
