However it is good to see that despite playing in Pune that Mumbai still gather a good crowd for where they are placed in the table and at a location that is known for its surprisingly low crowds.

Thats a good point...in general in other cities the local bengalies come to watch EB or MB...for example when EB or MB came play in Bangalore (HAL), crwd was lot more...same for Lajong

Ya but the crowd was not for HAL im guessing. It was for EB or MB (or Lajong). Thats the problem there. Mumbai could have been playing an away match today on what is supposed to be a neutral venue in my opinion. While the chants of Mumbai could be heard the Bagan chants easily could be heard through-out the 90 minutes and when the camera switched to the stands you could only see a few Mumbai shirts but plenty of Green and Maroon.

Its good to have a crowd, but just like the problem last week with the Churchill Brothers match only having 700 tickets sold while 6,000 were in the stadium, it needs to pay off for the home team on and off the pitch.

revenue from ticket is negligible in football

You should have said Indian Football. :)

  • Of course the two fans who reply could care less. And here we are thinking that Indian football can actually improve. What stupid assumption that is.

only sponsorship and merchandise is most important source of revenue

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! Ticket revenue means nothing! Why do you think clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, the Milans, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona and bloody Tottenham want to expand their stadiums or make new ones. Bigger ones, ones that can fill in more people! So they can make money, MONEY!!!! The stuff that can improve a team. Its not all sponsorships and merchandise and whoever told you that has no idea what he is thinking.

Look at the Bundesliga. One of their biggest source of money is ticket revenue!!! Why do you think they are so good. Sponsorships are no where near what they are in the Premier League or La Liga and merchandising is so much more bigger in England and Spain and yet Germany manages to remain one of the powers in domestic football.

    Look at these:

  • Also why do you think that a club like Pune FC is not as good as they should be. Based on what you said Pune FC should be the best because they have the most sponsorships and they sell merchandise. However they are not, they need money from tickets and they are not getting it.

I am seeing it live from MLS. We had 2 clubs fold shop at the beginning of the 21st century and it was all due to lack of ticket revenue. Heck, look at Portsmouth, Wimbledon, and Wigan. Two of those clubs are/were in the shits and the other, despite being in the Premier League and having equal pie to the other 19 clubs and yet because of their average 17,000 people in a 25,000 (low for Premier League standards) they cant buy better.
