@sunny: No one cares about I league. Its just ISL nowadays. IMG ain't gonna do anything for I league. Lets me put a realistic situation.
First of all ISL is a short tournament. These big names coming for ISL are gonna be paid heavily. They are always gonna stay in 5 star hotels. Parties, girls, etc. This league has glamour. If it wouldn't had been for the short duration, these players would have never come here. They have better options in their hands. Do you think they'd come to INDIA which is ranked at 151 in world just to play football when they can go to US, European leagues( Lower Tiers) where quality of life is better. We have zero INFRASTRUCTURE for football. Even second tier or third tier clubs have better infrastructure than us. Do you think any of the I league clubs will be able to attract such big names. First of all none of the I league club will be able to pay at all. Secondly, even if they want to play for full season. They are gonna come with their families. With the wide range of problems in our country ( Sadly Foreigners refer to us as THIRD WORLD), its not just about the money. These footballers are also humans. They want to enjoy life. Quality of life is still a long way to go in our country.
Synopsis: I league will not attract big names until NT does not improve. We need to improve on rankings. Then only we can have a strong league. These players are just coming for an experience. A short experience of INDIAN CULTURE. THAT's IT.
Del Piero, despite his age, was probably the best player on Sydney FC and the entire A-League last season. He is that good. When MLS said no to him I was pissed because people said "Good, we don't need oldies like that anymore" and all that... WHO CARES! THIS IS DEL PIERO!!!!
We need a player who is like David Beckham, can bring the star power to India and one who can still play great football... Del Piero is that man.
@sunny You do know the Federation Cup and I-League are not gone yet. It is not as if we will have 40 men to choose from for the whole season. Guys like Sunil Chhetri are not even included in that.
What will be ISL contribution towards Youth Development and Infrastructure ?? As of now nothing.
I still feel that spending 23 crores as wages on below par Indian players is huge waste of resources, how many of these players will manage to get such contract outside India ? None of them will, even with 50% of it on yearly basis.
