ISL referees learning to cope with heat, superstars
Referees in the Indian Super League have to be right on the money. The cashrich league, now under the collective gaze of the football world, cannot afford hiccups on the field and the men in black --or red --are up for the challenge.
For almost five months now, 40 Indian referees have been quietly taking lessons from the best in business and learning to effectively use communication systems for the first time.
“There is so much of investment, so much at stake in the ISL that our referees cannot afford to falter. There has been increased intensity (in their training), said Gautam Kar, head of referees department, All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Referees in ISL will be using communication systems that will help them to minimize mistakes on the field. The system allows referees to talk to their assistants using a microphone link and was widely used by officials during the World Cup.
Vanishing spray will also make its debut as referees seek to keep players, who constantly look to milk any advantage they can get, under check. The foam will be used by referees to mark the placement of the ball and the 10-yard line for defenders to stand behind during freekicks.
“With communication systems being put to use the standard of supervision is bound to improve,” said Kar.
The referees have also undergone a two-day crash course on “dealing with superstars” conducted by Ishiyama Noboru (Japan), one of FIFA’s leading referees’ instructor in the world.
“You have to be exceptional while dealing with superstars.
It’s not uncommon to see superstars testing referee’s calibre by pressurizing them,” explained Kar. The ISL features five World Cup winners, besides several players who have played for top clubs in and top competitions around the world.
Also for the first time, referees have been given the license to stop play for “cooling breaks” should they feel the heat and humidity is discomforting. The cooling breaks, if needed, will be taken 30 minutes into the game.
According to FIFA rules, cooling breaks are necessary if the temperature shows 30 degrees and humidity levels at 60 per cent. During the three-minute cooling break, players can receive drinks, cool themselves down and get back on the field, revitalized.
@7negi Holy Crap! Zlatan knows! It's great to see him wish the league, but would have been better if he did it while doing a bicycle kick Zlatan style! :P Now let us see if new Diwalli ad can impress Pirlo in the #PirlonotImpressed campaign!
