India was formed so that it will help British to control the territory and do business. India was never united before British, it was ruled and handled by individual princely state. We came together to fight Mughal and European invasion during the period.
Now in the world biggest democratic country, We need to fight to use my lang in my own state which is against the Constitution. If this is not going to change, We need to fight and protect our linguistic, culture and demography.
Hold your horses @Maddie. All the linguistic States came into existence after 1956. Before that there was no Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh. Even then the Dravidian languages thrived while coexisting with the rest. And I dont see all the hue and cry over the supposed Hindi imposition just because some boards have their name in Hindi. As far as I know there is no directive by the central govt to states on Compulsory use of hindi in official communication. Also , Hindi is not Compulsory to be taught in Schools across south. So, pray tell me how is your language is losing its importance. Do you have any official figures which states that the number of Kannada Speakers has gone down and that of Hindi speakers have gone up in your state. Just because some bill boards have come up with Hindi names does not mean Hindi inposition.
About Hindi announcement at Railway Stations, that is Central Govt's decision to make as Railway comes under Central Govt and not State Govt. The announcement is made in Hindi, English and Local Language, so that information can be conveyed to each and every commuter and this had been the practice for decades.
All the so called central institution was offering in the state lang slips but now SBI forms, Railway tickets are printed in Hindi and English. How my people will be able to transact using this ? I feel they are handicapped. This way , Hindia is making us to learn Hindi. Last week when I flew back from Amesterdam to Bengaluru in damn Jet Airways , I was served in Hindi and English, This is the way they are making me to learn Hindi. I'm fortunate enough know little of both. if I didn't know the language, I would be stuck at 40000 ft even for water!!!
Flights/Train/Banks should provide the services in the lang of origin or destination.
My only condition is - Kannada should be served in Karnataka, Tamil in Tamilnadu , Bengali in Bengal . I'm not expecting everyone to serve in my lang when i'm aboard or other parts of India
1 > Any Business - Should serve in my lang in my state
If they don't serve, I will fight for my freedom to protect my culture.
A flight from Bengaluru to Trivandrum should have instructions in Kannada, Malayalam, and English but its always Hindi and English. Nobody speaks or understands Hindi in the South.
I do not support any disintegration of India especially at a time when China is getting increasingly assertive. But Central government should understand that Hindi doesn't represent India.
(Intentional) Decline of adherence to tri-language policy can bring disasters. That why I am saying constitution must be followed strictly to avoid this disasters.
Again, this is not Hindi imposition. The forms come in English too, which I dont think anyone has problem with. Also Railway forms can be filled in Local Languages too even if it is only in Hindi/English. By the way, all the State Government’s services are provided in Local Languages. I was in Bengaluru a few years back and found all the names on Buses and Bus Stop in Kannada. All the communication of State Govt is done in Local Languages. It would be Hindi imposition if the Central Govt makes it compulsory to be taught in Schools and all Services provided in Hindi only, which is not the case.
Successive Central governments' overzealousness in using Hindi in most of their communications is of course an irritant. And it definitely is not a case of some billboards, forms or station announcements only. In national entrance exams, you are allowed to use Hindi, thereby giving the Hindi-speakers an unfair advantage.
Official imposition apart, the main theatre where this 'imposition' is playing out is the movies and TV, namely, Bollywood. South probably is holding out here, but rest of India has succumbed. And there are many socio-cultural, even economic reasons for this.
There are counter arguments as well: It pays to be multi-lingual. It broadens your horizons, enriches your language (provided it holds its own in, at least, daily matters; and all languages are in equal footing), and actually unifies your country. Otherwise, you will keep on erecting fences around you and divide the country in myriad fragments.
