Desmond Bulpin is a passionate man. Presently in charge of India’s Pre-Olympic Qualifier against Qatar, the hard taskmaster is impressed with the discipline of his boys. In a freewheeling interview to www.the-aiff.com, Bulpin stresses India will have their chances in the two matches and need to cash in on them. Excerpts:
How has Team India’s preparation been?
The incessant rain has been a bane. But on days we haven’t been able to train on the field, we have compensated with indoor sessions. The attitude of the boys have been excellent.
Do you have any idea as to how Qatar have prepared for the match?
They have been long preparing for this match. They have had a long camp in Spain. Add to add the wonderful facilities they boast of, I’d say they’ve prepared a bit more than us. Let’s not forget they stay way above us in the FIFA rankings.
Does India stand a chance of beating Qatar?
Why not? It’s a football match after all. There’s no doubting they are more technically equipped and an advanced footballing nation than us. So they will try to dominate. But I’m sure we will have our chances too. We are working on our set-pieces and have specific plans which I can’t divulge at the moment.
How much of a help is the fact that Indian Arrows form the nucleus of the Indian side?
Obviously it helps when the boys have stayed and played together for such a long time. They gel well both on and off the field. In that sense, we stay ahead of Qatar. But the National Team is not just about the Arrows. The other boys who have come in have impressed me with their attitude, discipline and professionalism.
What would be your strategy in Qatar?
We need to defend well. There isn’t any room for silly mistakes. Given the fact there are many Indians based in Doha, I expect good support for our boys. That would pump up the boys for sure.
If it rains during India’s home-match in Pune on June 23, will it help India?
Let’s take one match at a time. I’m concentrating on the away-match at the moment. But yeah, if it rains during our home-match, I won’t complain.
Largely similar to Ash' team but i put Jewel in, moved Shilton to the left wing, Anthony to the right (or vice versa, from what i've read they both play both wings), and Dika to the bench. I admit i haven't seen Dika play (or any of these guys, for that matter) and am basing my selection on the basis of what i've read online. I'd really liked to have included Gilbert on the left wing and pushed Shilton to the right wing, but Gilbert's not on this team.
As to Zakeer's age, I want to see a long-form birth certificate! I have seen everything from July 14, 1982 (goal.com), July 14, 1983 (soccerway), June 1987 (keralafootball), June 20, 1990 (AIFF) and June 6, 1990 (wikipedia). Enough to make the AFC suspicious.
Guys we will try our best to promote the match, esp. in non football communities. We need the following help :
1) confirmation about the channel and timings
2) Please be creative and try to provide us some peppy and cool lines to attract people. Lines or a description..anything
If you guys have more ideas on promoting this game, please tell us....Let's make it big

Is it not true that three members of the team can be above the age limit of 23, then why this suspicion about Zakeer

Great initiative. I will try my best to find the live stream link. For promotion, I suggest all the IFN members to join indianfootynet and retweet their promotional event frequently. we will also share links on our facebook accounts. this should also be used to make people aware abt IFNF and bring them on the discussion table over here!
I would prefer us to start the game in mid with the regular combination of jewel, shilton and dika on right wing..possibly jibon wud be the left winger as he has playd against qatar before..zakeer is a good player but we might see him as first sub since he hasnt played too much with these guys..gurwinder wud most probably be played at left back though am surprised he got selected ahead of lalrozama who is a good left back too..I wud have prefered Inder as CB instead of deepak as he has better height and makes lesser mistakes..going with too many changes in defence might not be a gud idea for us coz then it wud be similar to these guys playng for the first time..kattimani under the posts is a safe option but if gurpreet starts then its gonna be disastrous for us.surprisingly jagroop made it to senior probables list ahead of gurpreet but cudnt mke the 18 member squad here!!..jeje and sabeeth wud have to be at their sharpest best if we are to get somethng out of this game as sub manan hasnt been amongst the goals at all..
